Some people roam Hobby Lobby and are inspired at every turn in the store. That’s exactly what it’s like for me at the Dollar Tree. Every time I go there (usually with a very specific list), I find no less than 20 items that I want to create something with.

In case you haven’t noticed, most Dollar Tree stores sell those re-positionable wall stickers. The options are always changing and recently I found a fantastic and colorful set of cactus ones. I knew immediately that I wanted to make something with them. The other awesome budget item you can always find at these are inexpensive frames. Boom!

That’s the perfect combination for some gorgeous new artwork for our home. Even better, the stickers included have colorful pots which are perfect for cheering up any space. I already had the paint so for a few dollars I have a new set of DIY cactus art that brightens up our newly decluttered living room. Come on, how awesome is that?

Next, take apart the frames.

Step 3 (Optional)

Then protect your glass from paint with painter’s tape, or (as I did), with the insert from your frame.

Step 4

Once your glass is protected, paint your frames. Again, I cannot say enough about A Maker’s Studio rescue restore paint. It is absolutely phenomenal at both coverage and the even the smell!

Step 5

Set your frame aside to dry completely.

Step 6

Next, paint your remaining frames and set aside to dry.

Step 7 (Optional)

If you use acrylic paint the frames require a second coat of paint. Apply it after the first coat of paint dries and, again, set aside to dry.

Step 8

While the frames dry, attach cactus wall stickers to the glass inserts that do not include matting.

Note:

Step 9

After your frames are dry, reassemble them without the backing, including the cardboard. You want the glass to be see-through.

Step 10

Lastly, add cactus stickers to the reassembled frames that include matting.

Step 11 (Optional)

Use an XActo Knife to trim any stickers that go over the matting in your frame.

These DIY cactus art home accessories are seriously easy to make and totally inexpensive too! You can find the main materials at your local Dollar Tree and you can grab the paint right here (I used Paris Flea Market). A small container of paint goes such a long way, especially because of how well it covers. That means you use even less! In addition to that, one set of cactus wall stickers makes up to 5 or 6 pieces of cactus art. That means you can create an entire beautiful gallery wall easily and on a budget.

Glass votive holders at the thrift store are a dime a dozen… okay, maybe more like 25 cents each but still. You know what I mean. I can’t count the number of times I’ve strolled past them without a thought. This time I wanted to challenge myself to spend the smallest amount on my project so I grabbed 3 of these for only 75 cents.

I knew I wanted to do something spring-y but wasn’t quite sure what. Then I saw these butterfly stencil masks in my stash and thought they were perfect for spring. Boom! I was ready to start crafting.

It wasn’t until after they were made that I realized what a great gift they make and since we’re in the process of decluttering right now, why not make something beautiful to give away. Filled with candy and an electronic candle, these are the perfect easy gift for Mother’s Day, teacher appreciation gifts, and more!

Step 1

First, clean your glass votive holders.

Step 2

Next, place your stencils on a votive holder. I also recommend taping off the edges because it makes it easier to clean edges.

Step 3

After your stencils and tape are in place, fill in the unmasked area with one paint color. Mine needed a couple of back-to-back coats to achieve the bright, vibrant color.

Step 4

Before the paint dries, carefully pull off your tape.

Step 5

Then carefully pull off your stencil masks. This is easier with a pair of slanted tweezers. If you use your fingers, the paint is more likely to smear.

Step 6

After the tape and stencil masks are removed, let the paint dry completely.

Step 7

Repeat steps 2 through 6 for each votive holder. You can use the same stencil masks and color or you can change it up like I did.

Step 8

Once the paint is dry, place your votive holders on a sheet pan and place the pan in a cold oven.

Step 9

Set your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for 30 minutes to set the paint.

Step 10

After 30 minutes, turn the oven off but do not remove the votive holders. Allow them to cool down slowly in the oven.

Once your votive holders are made, you can totally keep them for yourself to use as decor. However, they also make a great gift (Mother’s Day is around the corner). Oh, and did I mention that they’re super easy to make?!

DIY Hand Print Turkey Shirt | Thanksgiving Kids Craft

Sometimes during this time of year we get so caught up in everything we have to do that the kiddos can feel a little left out. This is especially true for the youngest ones still at home. Take a time out this weekend and make this DIY hand print turkey shirt with your kiddos for them to wear on the big day.

[bctt tweet=”Take a break this weekend and enjoy some crafty fun with this DIY hand print turkey shirt. It’s quick to make and you get some quality time together!” username=”diyadulation”]

This year has thrown into sharp contrast how busy the holidays get for us. In addition to my oldest being in more activities, my husband has been in Louisiana since October 22 for a military training. Good old Murphy is asserting his presence while I’m single-momming it.

A Visit from Murphy

This included my youngest getting Croup which I had never even heard of before. I must have gotten lucky with the older two, but at almost midnight on Halloween night, I heard my son wake up sounding like he couldn’t breath. Talk about scary! I was ready to rush him to the ER until I talked to my momma (God bless her) and she told me what it sounded like.

We slept propped up on the couch the rest of that night and headed to the doctor the next morning. He is since doing so much better, but it really made me look at how on the go we are. Some of the things are outside of my control such as holidays and after-school activities, but how often am I working on Christmas presents instead of hanging out with my kid this time of year? The answer is too often.

That’s why we decided to take a break and enjoy some crafty fun with this DIY hand print turkey shirt. It doesn’t take long but we had so much fun making it. We also got some quality momma and baby time. I want that for you and your kiddos too!

White T-Shirt Laying Flat

Step 1

First, lay out your t-shirt. Depending on the age of your kids, you may want to put it on a protected surface like old newspaper.

Step 2

Next, put your cardboard inside of the shirt to separate the front and the back. This keeps your paint from seeping through the fabric and marking the back. It also keeps the sides from getting stuck to each other.

Step 3

Begin placing hand prints on the shirt by covering your kid’s hand with fabric paint and having him press the hand firmly, fingers fanned out, down on the t-shirt. Clean any remaining paint from your child’s hand.

Step 4

Continue adding hand prints in different colors, fanning out like feathers. Be sure to clean his hand between each paint color.

Step 5

Lastly, add some black paint to your child’s hand and have him press his hand firmly down in the center, fingers together and thumb sticking out. Again, clean the paint off of your kid’s hand.

Step 6

Now, take your paint brush and fill out the turkey shape using the black hand print as a guide. The thumb becomes the beak and the hand is the head. Don’t forget a bulbous body that hits all of the colorful hand prints.

Step 7

Allow your paint to dry before moving on.

Step 8

After your paint has dried, add a yellow beak and pink (or red) snood.

Step 9

Again, allow your paint to dry completely.

Step 10

Once your paint is dry, toss the shirt in the dryer for 20 minutes to set the fabric paint.

When washing your turkey shirt, flip it inside out to protect the paint, especially the beak and snood. After washing, you can dry it as you would any other plain t-shirt.

This DIY hand print turkey shirt is so much fun to make, especially with toddlers. They laugh and squeal when you put the paint on their hands and it’s absolutely adorable. Be sure to have your camera ready for some fantastic candid shots. Then on Thanksgiving, throw on your turkey shirts and some sweaters and you’re ready to go. Pretty awesome, huh?
