I love Halloween! This is partly because my birthday is October 27th but that’s not the only reason. Everything about dressing in costumes, getting free candy, and scary movies suits who I am at my core.

It’s no surprise that I take that same stance with the food. A friend once threw me a birthday party and my cake had tombstones on it with my name and current year as the date of death on it. I loved it!

That’s not something other people would appreciate. Can you imagine celebrating your mom’s birthday in June with a graveyard cake? I doubt it. It works for October, though.

Mummies, bones, and monsters are all fair game in the food department this season. You’ll find all of those and more in the spooky fun Halloween party food ideas below.

I absolutely love horror films. Like, can’t get enough of them kind of love them. The awesome thing about this time of year is that everyone is in the mood for horror movies too.

Luckily, I’m always ready with a recommendation. Even better, I’ve seen almost every horror film on Netflix. (Thank goodness they’re adding more so I have a fresh new supply for the holiday.)

If you’re looking for an awesome horror movie to watch on Netflix you don’t have to wade through the bad ones. I’ll give you the goods on the best ones so you can simply watch and enjoy.

The Diabolical

This movie follows a tough as nails mom trying to raise her 2 kids on her own. It certainly doesn’t make matters any easier that they’re being haunted by something they can’t explain.

Death Note

If you haven’t watched Death Note you are missing out! This movie is action-packed and clever as it follows a teenage boy who gets his hands on a book that can kill people… and meets the demon who comes with it.

Before I Wake

This one is both scary and heartfelt. After the loss of their son, 2 parents take in a foster child with a strange ability. Even better, this one is PG-13 so it’s one you can watch with older children.

The Boy

I originally rented this one after it came out despite poor reviews and I’m so glad I did. In it, a nanny is hired to watch a child only to find out that it is a doll the parents pretend is their son. The twists and turns will make you wonder if the parents are crazy or the nanny is.

The House at the End Of Time

This is a Spanish movie with subtitles, which I know some people don’t like, but it is brilliant. A dying woman gets to spend her last days on house arrest in her family home instead of prison. Of course, in this case prison might be safer. It is a must-watch for a scary good movie night.

Extinction

Yet another brilliant Netflix original, this movie follow a man who is plagued by nightmares of an alien invasion. Unfortunately, soon he must face those fears head on with his wife and two daughters. If your kids can handle violence, this one is family friendly too, in my opinion. (Of course, always vet movies yourself to make sure they meet your family-friendly standards.)

The Signal

This movie was surprisingly good. The description tells you that it is about college friends on a road trip who run into major trouble in the dessert. What it doesn’t tell you is that they are overly-proud hackers chasing someone who out-hacked them. It definitely gets high marks on the creep factor scale. It is also PG-13 if you’re looking for a horror film for the family.

OtherLife

The ultimate example of when technology goes wrong, this movie follows a young woman fighting with her partner about how to use the new drug they invented… a drug that induces a time-compressed virtual reality. It combines trippy with terrifying ego in one place.

Rebirth

This one is definitely not a family-friendly movie but it is the perfect film for after the kids go to bed. A guy gets his friend to go to a rebirth retreat that is full of activities from the sickest minds. It is so crazy you can’t help but keep watching.

Would You Rather

If you’re looking for a gory, cringe-worthy horror film then this is definitely the one for you. A girl in desperate need of money agrees to take part in a game only she doesn’t realize exactly what she has agreed to until it’s too late.
