Before you get started painting you need to take the family for a trip to your local Wal-Mart and pick up Clorox Spray and Viva Vantage paper towels. We love how wide the aisles at Wal-Mart are! They are perfect when you have the whole family with you. They also make it easy for kids to get in on the shopping action. Little man could even shop from Papa’s shoulders which made him infinitely happy.

Once you get home, you want to clear a large space for your painting project. We moved the table and chairs from the dining room for our project. That gave us plenty of space to work with.

Unfortunately, when we moved the furniture I found some stains from goodness knows how long ago on the floor. (Note to self, kids are messy!) Thankfully, I already had my Clorox Cleaning Spray and Viva Vantage paper towels. I didn’t even have to let the Clorox soak on the stains. The stains wiped right up. Score! Once I finished, we had a clean, disinfected surface (thanks to Clorox Cleaner’s 99.9% germ killing strength) and were ready to get started.

Giant Tiki Men Materials

Step 1

Tape the edge of your paper roll to the floor.

Step 2

Roll out the paper 3-4 feet and cut it.

Next, tape the cut edge to the floor as well.

Repeat steps 1-3 for each tiki man that you want to create.

Begin drawing your tiki man by adding the bottom detail to the first sheet of taped paper.

Next, outline the mouth as pictured above.

Add a second line inside of the mouth to form lips.

Then draw teeth inside of the lips of your tiki man.

Next, draw a semi-circle above the center of your mouth.

After the kids have finished painting, let the tikis sit to dry.

Remove the paintings from the floor carefully to avoid ripping and hang them on the wall where you want them displayed.

Once you have finished your finger painted tiki men it is time for clean-up. With Clorox cleaner this took us no time at all. Seriously, you guys, we spent less than 5 minutes getting everything cleaned up, including squirmy kids. The craft took longer than the clean-up and that’s how it should be. The fun should always last the longest. The Viva Vantage paper towels last, too. We used one on the floor and it was strong enough to finish the entire job!

They are also soft enough to clean up the kiddos with. Fun Kid Craft: Googly Eyes Monogram

We’re back this week with another craft for kids using the Creative Play Kit! The kids had a blast making this one because it involved googly eyes. I have no idea what makes these little plastic pieces so entertaining but my kids go nuts for them. That’s what makes them great for creating fun bedroom décor that kids will love hanging on the wall. Even better is that this googly eyes monogram is super easy to make. Older kids will have no trouble and younger children will do great with a little guidance from mom.

Materials

Step 1

Have each child choose a color of construction paper for the monogram.

Step 2

Next, draw each child’s first initial in block lettering in the center of the construction paper.

Tips:

  • Mom, you may want to do this part for kiddos.
  • Use a lighter colored pencil to draw your letters. I used white on the paper so that there isn’t an obvious outline on the artwork.

Step 3

Next, give each child the monogrammed construction paper, a glue stick, and googly eyes.

Step 4

Have kids begin gluing the eyes inside of the monogram starting with the largest sized eyes.

Tip:

  • Place the eyes at random over the monogram. You want them to be spread out.

Step 5

After the large eyes have been added begin filling in more of the monogram with the medium eyes.

Step 6

Lastly, fill in the remainder of the monogram with the smallest googly eyes.

Frame your child’s monogram and hang it on the wall. We used these child’s artwork frames and they worked great!

It is that simple to create custom art for kids’ rooms. They will love making this googly eye monogram and love showing it to family and friends. I do recommend having each child choose one style of googly eyes for a more cohesive look (it will also preempt any arguments during creation). Too many different styles can make the monogram look messy. Luckily there are 4 different styles in the Creative Play Kit which makes sticking with one easy. Getting your home ready for the 4th isn’t the pomp and circumstance that other holidays are. A lot of the decorations are for outdoors or party décor. There is one wall in our dining room that is reserved for just such décor. We decorate it for parties, like little man’s baseball birthday, and for holidays like Independence Day. The trouble is that it’s a big wall and finding seasonal décor for it can be expensive. That’s why this DIY patriotic medallion wall art is perfect. It allows you to create large scale décor on a small scale budget.

Step 1

Open both sets of patriotic hanging fans.

Note:

  • You need both sets to have enough large fans for your décor.

Step 2

Unfold the fans and secure them.

Tip:

  • The fans come with sticky tabs but because of how we are using them, I recommend using additional tape to secure them.

Step 3

Next, start designing your artwork.

Tip:

  • Have a general idea of how you want your artwork laid out before taping the fans together.

Step 4

Once you know how your artwork will fit together, start taping pieces together. Make sure you are taping them on the back so that the tape doesn’t show when your artwork is hung.

Step 5

Continue taping your fans together until your desired size and design are reached.

Tips:

  • Create visual interest by varying the sizes and designs of the fans next to each other.
  • Don’t be afraid to put some of the smaller ones in the back of your design.
  • Check your design periodically by carefully flipping your design over.
  • Make sure that you tuck the cardboard handles behind the fans.

After your design is complete, secure it with more tape on the back to keep it from coming apart while hanging.

Lastly, hang your artwork on the wall with flat tacks.

This is such an easy do-it-yourself project. It comes together in 20 minutes; less if you don’t spend as long choosing your design as I did.
