There is weird trait I’ve noticed that is present in both children and adults. We love knocking things over. That’s why games like bowling and Jenga are timeless classics in the world. Essentially, if we can make a game where we get to destroy the crap out of something, we’re all for it.

Ironically it doesn’t seem to matter whether the object is to do so (as in bowling) or prevent it (as in Jenga). As long as something crashes we’re in. That’s how you know your kids will love this easy little game.

It lets them exercise that destruction-loving trait inside. You set ’em up and knock ’em down. It takes no batteries, no crazy wires… none of it. Even better? It is super easy to make so you can whip it up last minute if you need to.

Pumpkin Pillow Fight Game Materials

Lidded Cardboard Pumpkin Box

Step 1

First, remove the lids from your pumpkin boxes and set them aside. You don’t need them for this project but they are perfect for this Halloween banner project.

Orange Painted Pumpkins next to a paint pallet

Step 2

Next, paint the outside of your pumpkin boxes with a coat orange acrylic paint and allow it to dry.

Step 3

Add a second coat of orange acrylic paint to your pumpkins so that no cardboard show through.

Step 4

Again, allow you paint to dry completely before moving on.

Step 5 (Optional)

Flip your pumpkins over and paint the inside of the pumpkin boxes with black acrylic paint. I think this gives them a cleaner, more finished look. Of course, if you’re in a hurry or simply like the natural cardboard look, you can skip this step.

Step 6

Next, flip your pumpkins back over and paint stems on your orange pumpkin boxes with brown acrylic paint.

While your brown paint dries, add the sleeping faces to the front of your pumpkins with black acrylic paint.

Tip:

Step 10

Next, line up the edges of 2 cut rectangles, right sides together, and pin along the edges.

Note:

Sewn white fabric with needle and white thread

Step 11

Next, sew around each of your pillows leaving a small gap to turn the fabric right side out after sewing. Be sure to pull out the pins as you stitch your edges.

Step 12

Once all of your pillows are sewn, turn them right-side out through the small gap you left when sewing.

How to Host a Pitch-In Party | Budget Friendly Celebration

Pitch-ins, potlucks, or dish party… no matter what you call it, these are a popular party method for a reason. Our family reunion has been a pitch-in my entire life and I always looked forward to the dishes only found there.

It is also a budget-friendly way to feed a crowd without breaking the bank. That is part of why it’s so appealing. There are a few things to consider when hosting a pitch-in.

Salad in a red polka dot bowl and white dish full of grilled chicken and corn

Food and Drinks

It’s always a good idea to specify if you expect guests to bring their own drinks in addition to a dish to share. A lot of pitch-ins provide the drinks for guests but this can get pricey depending on your guests. For ultimate frugality, I suggest letting guests know to bring their own.

Keep the food simple. If you are providing the main dish, stick with hot dogs and hamburgers. They are cost effective and most everyone will eat them.

Don’t worry about chips and cookies either. In every group there are the ones who will stop at a store for their dishes. Chips and cookies always show up.

Supplies

Make sure you have disposable plates, forks, and cups. You don’t want to get stuck with a huge mess to clean up at the end of the night. If these are out of your budget, try having a few guests in charge of these items in lieu of a dish.

I also recommend having a Sharpie handy for labeling cups. These things always get mixed up throughout the celebration. Having guests label their cups prevents that.

Entertainment

It’s not enough to invite people over and feed everyone. You need some sort of entertainment. Luckily, there are plenty of ideas that don’t break the bank.

Corn Hole

This is an easy outdoor game for people to enjoy. Have everyone with a set bring theirs so that multiple groups can play at once. Here is a great tutorial to make your own set, too!

Fire Pit

It appears to be a universal man law that if they can play with fire, they will. A small fire pit isn’t that expensive and always a great gathering place for guests.

Warning: Be sure to check your local ordinances before purchasing one. Some neighborhoods don’t allow the use of fire pits.

Board Games

Don’t let the outdoors fool you. Board games are as much a blast on the back deck as they are in the house. Don’t be afraid to try an outdoors game night. Get awesome ideas for games here.

Make Your Own Food

Food is the biggest expense when throwing a party. Save your money by making your own instead of buying pre-packaged. This is especially true of fruit and vegetable trays. Make your own to save some serious coin.

Create Stations

Create stations that serve specific functions for guest convenience. Start with a drink station complete with a beverage dispenser (like this football one) and cups. Don’t forget an ice bucket if you need it.

Next, create the food stations. Keep like foods grouped together. For example, all of the desserts should be in the same area of the food table.

Lastly, place napkins, plates, and utensils in a section together. I always like to bookend the food with 2 separate utensil sections. This makes it easy if guests are only grabbing a napkin or trying to grab some dessert.

Don’t Forget Levels

Don’t forget to create levels when displaying food, drinks, and utensils. This allows you to fit more on the table and is also more aesthetically pleasing. For example, our beverage dispenser is elevated on a cake plate. I also used the extra chili cups to elevate cutlery and dessert trays. Remember tip one: Get Creative!
