The best part of finding that awesome item is the creativity it sparks within you. Instead of seeing what the item is, you see what it can become. That is exactly what happened when I saw this village wall hanging. The traditional paint design didn’t suit my style but I love the clean lines and knew I could turn it into a unique, modern design for my home. This thrift store village art makeover delivers just that: a modern glam piece of artwork that I love.

Step 3

Put on a second coat of white paint and allow it to dry.

Step 4 (Optional)

Depending on the condition of your thrift store village art, you may want to add a third coat as I did. Mine was still quite vibrant so it needed this extra coat.

Tip:

  • You want to still be able to see a faint outline of the details through the paint.

Step 5

Trace the faint outlines of doors and windows with your foiling adhesive and one of your small paintbrushes. Feel free to take some creative liberty during this step.

Step 6

Allow the adhesive to dry until tacky and then cover with your foil sheets.

Step 7

Gently press down on the sheets to better secure to the adhesive.

I am absolutely in love with how this thrift store village art makeover turned out! It’s bright, shiny, and abstract which make it beautiful. I had all of the materials on hand already except the village art which only cost $2! You simply can’t find artwork this gorgeous for that kind of price. After you make this DIY project be sure to check out the ideas from my amazing creative friends below!

Unique DIY Wedding Guest Book

Weddings are expensive. Even when you DIY everything you are still looking at a hefty chunk of change. Add to that the fact that you want your wedding to be unique and special and it can seem like an impossible task. Last year I had the awesome privilege of being a part of some of my best friends’ wedding. I helped them with decorations, photos, and the inevitable emergencies that crop up on the big day. One of my favorite projects from the wedding was this unique DIY wedding guest book.

Step 1

Remove all of the packaging from your canvas.

Step 2

Place your wall sticker in the center of your canvas.

Tip:

  • The adhesive on these probably won’t be strong enough to keep it in place, especially once guests start signing it. Make it stronger by applying Mod Podge to the back before attaching it to the canvas.

Step 3

Allow Mod Podge to dry completely.

Step 4

Have guests sign your canvas during the wedding with Sharpie markers.

Tip:

  • Easily make this match your décor by choosing coordinated marker colors.

Step 5

After the wedding, seal your entire canvas with Mod Podge and allow it to dry completely.

The best part is that you can change the style by simply changing the wall sticker and colors. I already had the canvas for this project so it literally only cost me a dollar! Even if you have to buy the canvas you are still only looking at a few bucks to create a unique wedding memento that will last forever. That is much less than a traditional guest book would cost you. Be honest, how often would you open your guest book to look at the signatures anyway? Mine went in a box after the wedding and I never looked at it again. Don’t let that happen to you. Save your money and enjoy your special day long after it ends.

DIY Home and Heart Cutting Board

Do you set a Christmas budget each year? Last year I set a Christmas gift budget of $500 for almost 30 people. When all was said and done, I actually did even better, coming in at $487.39! This isn’t because I utilized gift cards earned from Swagbucks or Mpoints. It was because of careful budgeting, smart shopping, and DIY gifts like this DIY home and heart cutting board. Those are the ways to have a budget Christmas without the remorse at New Years.

Step 1

Remove all of the packaging from your cutting board.

Tip:

  • If there are stickers on it, you want to make sure you get all of the sticky off. Use soap and water if you need to.

Step 2

Print out the “Home and Heart” printable.

Tip:

  • Save on ink and print this with the ‘quick print’ or ‘draft’ option if you have it. You just need to see the letters are enough to trace them.

Step 3

Color over the back of your paper where the words are.

Step 4

Place the paper phrase so that it is centered on the cutting board, pencil-side down.

Tip:

  • You may want to cut out the design so that it is easier to center.

Step 8

Tie a knot in the cord and trim the excess.

Note:

  • I left 3-4 inches of excess to add a little bit of decoration to it. This is totally optional.

This is a seriously easy gift to make for Christmas or even as a wedding present. It comes together quickly and I already had all of the materials except the cutting board so it is inexpensive as well. That makes it perfect in my book. Feel free to change it up, too.

  • You can try out different designs and sayings.
  • You can also personalize it with the family’s name to make it even more special.
  • Attach a different style of cord or ribbon to hang it from.

Before you start making your gifts it is important to create a written budget. Even when you DIY your gifts, you are still spending money and you want to keep track of that money. You can get a free copy of the exact gift budget I use in the VIP Library of Resources. It is the number one tool to keep your holiday spending on track.
