Master Bedroom Update Checklist

Bedding Set

The very first step in updating your master bedroom is to choose your bedding set. You can find out why this is important and tips for choosing it here.

Paint Color

You need to choose your paint color next. You need to know your wall colors before you can choose other aspects of your décor. (Find out more about picking your paint colors below.)

Furniture Style and Color

Your furniture style is not as important as your furniture color. You can get away with mismatched furniture if you paint all of the pieces the same color. You can also easily update hardware to match as well.

Layout

Next choose your bedroom layout. You may not think this is important but things such as bed placement and side tables are crucial to opening up your room. They also contribute to the overall feel (and subsequently the effective relaxation) of your bedroom.

Curtains

Once you know the above details you can choose your curtains. To make your decision easier, take a pillow sham from your bedding set to the store with you. This will allow you to match the curtains seamlessly with your décor.

Lighting

Choosing your lighting does not just mean picking out lamps. While this is important, it is equally important to choose the type of lighting. If you want ambient lighting then darker/thicker shades should be chosen. Task lighting should be added if you enjoy reading in bed. Consider how you will use your bedroom outside of sleep when selecting lighting.

Organization

You have to plan your organization. Implement systems that make sense for you. Don’t forget to organize more than your clothes. Do you need to charge your electronics at night? Do you keep books by your bedside table? These are all areas that need to be accounted for organizationally.

Accessories

This is where things start getting fun! Choose accessories to up the aesthetics in your room. Accessories are a great way to add pops of color to your bedroom. Choose items that are beautiful and make you smile. Bonus points if you can make the accessories functional beauty as well.

Little Details

These are the things that might get overlooked. The switch plates, your closet doors, and more are all small ways to personalize your bedroom. Add sliding barn doors to your closet for a rustic touch. Paint your switch plates. Put a full-length mirror over your bedroom door.

Finishing Touches

Once you’ve done all of the above it is time to add the finishing touches to your master bedroom oasis. Arrange a throw on your bed. Clean everything and include washing the windows, vacuum the floor, and dust. When you’ve finished take a look at your new bedroom and bask.

How to Pick Your Paint Colors

Before choosing your paint colors you need to pick your bedding set. From there you can use the colors of your bedding set to select coordinating colors. Even if you choose a plain, cream colored bed set it gives you a jumping point for choosing your paint colors. Think of it like a Venn diagram. Choose a neutral color, a primary color, and an accent color. See the photo below for reference.

Notes:

  • The ideas listed in each section are options. If you choose neutral as your wall color the idea is to choose a different component for your primary.
  • The term “primary” here refers to your primary color choice not necessarily a primary color (red, yellow, and blue).
  • Your accent color can be used on all of the listed elements or less at your discretion.
  • The “pop” sections are the colors you sparingly use such as in a single piece of art or on little details (from the checklist).

I chose an Ecru for our walls because of the bright and diverse colors in the comforter (which has arrived, yay). This allows me to choose bright and colorful accessories for the room as well. I look forward to sharing the awesome finds I come across when we get to that step. Before you go, make sure you download your free master bedroom update checklist. Home improvement doesn’t always need to mean ripping down walls or adding new flooring. You can improve your space with some paint, by rearranging furniture, or by updating your wall art. Big changes are coming to our home some of which have already started, like the master bedroom, and some still being planned. The living room is the next big project after the bedroom and it all revolves around this DIY easy foiled family wall art. You can make your own to inspire you to revamp your living room, too!

Step 1

Remove the packaging from your canvas.

Step 2

Mix some red and white paint together until you get your desired color of pink. I went for a gorgeous hot pink but you can choose what shade fits your style.

Step 3

Cover your entire canvas thickly with the pink paint. Do not let dry before moving on to the next steps.

Step 4

Immediately add some drops of white paint at random places on your canvas and brush into streaks.

Tip:

  • Do not over-brush it or it will blend with the pink paint.

Step 5

Next, add yellow to your pink paint (not on your canvas) and mix to get an orange shade.

Step 6

Dip your brush into the orange paint and carefully add orange streaks randomly to your painting.

Step 7

Put 2-3 dots of red paint onto your canvas and streak it as you did with the white paint in step 4.

Step 8

Allow the paint to dry completely.

Tip:

  • This will take a few hours because of the thick amounts of paint added. I recommend allowing your canvas to dry overnight.

Step 9

After your painting has dried, add your foil adhesive in random streaks across your canvas.

Note:

  • Do not cover the entire canvas.

Step 10

Allow the adhesive to dry until tacky (roughly 2-3 minutes).

Step 11

Place foil pieces over the adhesive streaks.

Step 12

Press foil gently in place using a dry paint brush. Let site for a minute or two.

Step 13

Again, gently, brush the excess foil off of your canvas with the dry paint brush.

Tip:

  • This will be messy so I recommend doing it on a surface covered with newspaper to make cleanup easier.

Step 14

Next, brush the foil sealant over the foil.

Step 16

Add your letter “M” to the center of your painting.

Tip:

  • If you have trouble getting it to stick, add some Mod Podge to the back of it before attaching.

Step 18 (Optional)

Add a sealing coat of Mod Podge to your entire canvas.

Your wall art is finished as soon as your sealing coat is dry. If you would like, you can cover the edges of your canvas with paint. You can also get it framed to finish it off. I like the raw edges of the canvas and intend to keep it that way. As always, do what fits your style. You can also find more DIY ideas to improve your space on the Home Décor page!

I love how this turned out! Book décor is always a fantastic idea in my very nerdy opinion. This DIY literary mirror fits perfectly in my new Alice in Wonderland nook along with the Moss Bunny Wall Art. The pictures below are the best I could get of my nook at the end of our hallway (which aren’t great, but you can see me. Hi!). The pictures above are the ones for you to get a better look of the finished mirror. Before you go, check out the awesome projects from my friends below!
