DIY Coffee Mug Organizing Rack

Coffee is an important part of my life. Just the smell of a fresh pot brewing instantly lifts my mood (any time of day, I might add). Because of this absolute love of coffee, one of the most difficult areas to de-clutter are my coffee mugs. I began collecting them on my travels many years ago in high school. They mean a lot to me and some are irreplaceable. That’s why it was a big deal when I took on decluttering this spring that I pared down my collection. I kept the ones that I simply couldn’t part with and decided that items that emotionally charged deserved to be displayed. Thus, this DIY coffee mug organizing rack idea was born.

Guests will be able to strike up a conversation about your unique collection and you will have freed up extra cabinet space. One last tip I want to leave you with: Definitely hand this on the wall and don’t skimp on the Command Strips. I got impatient and wanted to test out my DIY coffee mug organizing rack. I loaded it up and leaned it against the wall behind our coffee pot. The next day, I walked past it, into the kitchen, and immediately heard loud crashing and glass breaking.

I knew before I had even seen it that the mug rack had fallen. I saw the shattered mugs that meant so much to me and wept. Thankfully, not all of my mugs were on it yet. Once I hung the organizer, I tested it by pulling down on it with all of my strength. It didn’t budge so I felt very confident. It has now been hanging for 3 weeks with mugs on it and no more incidents.

Boys Room Makeover : Painting the Walls and Ceiling

Last weekend I had all of Saturday to myself which is pretty much unheard of when you’re married with 3 kids. In true mom form, I took advantage of it by working. Haha!  That is not to say that I didn’t make the most of it by blasting my music or catching up on some Criminal Minds while painting the walls and ceiling. Do you want to know my new tip for painting walls quickly and efficiently? Kick everyone out of your house! You will be amazed at how productive you can be when you’re not constantly filling up sippy cups, locating lost items, and mediating arguments. Okay, that is not really the tip I want to share with you today but it will ratchet up your productivity. You can find the tips for any painting job in the tutorial below. They can be used even when your house is full of demanding little ones.

Step 1

Clear everything out of the room including anything on the walls, like décor and wall stickers.

Step 2

Remove all of the outlet and switch plate covers in the room.

Step 3

Next, clean the walls, baseboards, trim, and ceiling.

Tip:

  • This room hasn’t been painted in the 3 years since we moved in so it had 3 years’ worth of crayon, marker, and nail polish stains from tiny hands. There are tips for getting this off (toothpaste, magic erasers, etcetera) but this was roughly 4 feet high and all around the room except where furniture was. I chose to do what I could and then add an extra coat of paint necessary.

Step 4

Before you paint, measure how far down onto the wall that you want the “night sky” to come. Cut a square of cardboard to that size.

Step 5

Then use that square of cardboard to measure that line from the ceiling all the way around the room and mark it with your yellow highlighter.

Step 6

As I said above, I didn’t use painters tape but if you do, this is the step to tape everything up.

Step 7

Next, throw down your drop cloth and start painting the lower walls.

Step 8

Paint one coat of paint with the roller up to the highlighter line on the walls.

Note:

  • I used Valspar Signature Interior Paint and Primer in One and I was amazed at how well it covered all of those crayon, marker, and nail polish stains in one coat!

Step 9

Fill in any corners and edges using your paint brush.

Step 10

Allow your first coat of paint to dry.

Step 11

Next add your second coat of paint and allow it to dry before moving on.

Step 12

After your wall paint is dry, paint your first coat of paint on the ceiling and the tops of the walls.

Step 13

Again, fill in any corners and edges with paint.

Step 14

Allow the first coat of ceiling paint to dry completely.

Step 15

Next, add a second coat of paint to the ceiling and the tops of the walls. Let it dry and you are done painting.

Step 16

Remove all of your tape and re-attach outlet and switch plate covers.

This is easily the longest part of the makeover. Even with an entire Saturday alone, painting the walls and ceiling took all weekend, if you don’t really have the spare time over the weekends to undertake these types of mortification, you might want to explore, NYC painters. One the plus side, I have eaten the frog as Mark Twain would say, and it is all downhill from here. Next, I am adding trim between the ceiling and wall color. After that I will add glow stars to the ceiling. Check out the Boys Room Makeover to see the other awesome projects coming your way. See you next week with the next room update!

Boys Room Makeover – A Camping Adventure

Back to school is right around the corner and I want to make the transition as easy as possible. Part of doing that involves creating an organized oasis for the boys. The boys decided that they wanted to switch rooms with baby girl in the spring. We got as far as moving the bed and clothes but that was pretty much it. Now they are left with a crazy, unorganized mess. I can’t even be mad about the state of their room because right now they have zero storage. This boys room makeover will give them a comfy bedroom with plenty of storage.

Problem Areas

  • Messy – There is a mess everywhere that you look. Even the walls look messy from where the toddlers colored on them and the remnants of wall stickers that are remaining.
  • No Storage – There is no storage in the room right now except for the dresser.
  • Window Treatment – Baby girl ripped down the curtain rod and curtains while the room was hers. We never got around to replacing them because there are still blinds on the window. We have hung a sheet to darken the room during nap time.
  • Nothing Matches – It is hard to relax in a room when everything is a mix of different colors and finishes.

Inspiration Board

  • Star Ceiling – Since I am going with a camping theme for the room, a starry night sky on the ceiling is perfect. I love how this one is brought down onto the walls some for a more encompassing effect.
  • Hobby Lobby Room – I love the adventure theme of this room. The mix of textures is exactly what I want for the boys.
  • Pipe Curtain Rod – This will give an industrial look to the room and it is also my hope that it will be strong enough to withstand crazy kiddos.
  • My Drawings – The drawings above are my personal ideas for how to transform the furniture as well as add additional storage.
  • Storage Lockers – I won’t be using this exact design because it doesn’t quite fit with the theme, but I love the mix of wood and metal. I want to incorporate that look into the storage piece that I make for the room.

This boys room makeover is a huge job but it is going to be worth it. I can’t wait to see the end result. Of course, baby girl is already asking for her room to get a makeover now too. It seems that we will be taking that one on next. For now, it is time to pull out the paint clothes, roll up my sleeves, and get started on this project. Come back next week for the paint tutorial and project updates.
