DIY Chalkboard Key Organizer

Organization is about 10% method and 90% convenience.  You can have the best organization systems in place but if they aren’t convenient they will fail.  Keys are a prime example of an item in your home that probably has a specific place in your home but it isn’t convenient when you walk through the door.  Therefore, it isn’t utilized (not that I speak from experience or anything… ahem.)

Key hooks make a great storage solution but if you don’t like the look of them you put them where no one will see them (the back of a cabinet door, for example).  If no one else can see them, neither can you which means you won’t use them.  This DIY chalkboard key organizer totally solves that.

Stop misplacing your keys with this super simple and pretty DIY!

Materials

Step 1

Prepare your frame by removing the glass and all inserts.

Step 2

Prop your frame on its side (landscape style) and glue 4 picture hooks to the bottom, evenly spaced.

*You can measure if you want to be exact but I chose to just eyeball it.

*Your props also don’t have to be fancy (like my awesome tissue box and water bottle above).

Step 3

Allow the glue to dry 24 hours.

**This is important.  Do not skip this step or you will compromise the strength of the adhesive and it won’t hold your keys.

Step 4

While your glue is drying, measure your chalkboard using the paper insert included in your frame.  Place it at the corner of the chalkboard paper and cut out your piece using the paper insert as a guide.

Step 5

Remove the backing from the adhesive chalkboard and place it directly onto the glass from your frame.

Step 6

After allowing your glue to dry completely, spray paint both sides of your frame with the metallic spray paint (including the added hooks).  Allow each layer to dry completely before adding another or turning over the frame.

*The color of your frame will determine the number of coats you need.  For the frame I used, it took 2 coats.

Step 7

Once your frame has finished drying, reassemble and hang it by the door you normally enter/exit your home through.

DIY Stamped Patriotic Napkins

Summer is a time for celebrations, sun, and (hopefully) more time for crafting. These celebrations don’t have mean excess waste for you though. Cloth napkins are an excellent way to save money, save the planet, and prevent mounds of trash for you after a gathering. That doesn’t mean you can’t have something cute and festive to use, though. Even better, they also don’t have to cost you a fortune. These simple stamped patriotic cloth napkins are perfect for summer BBQ’s and celebrations.

Step 1

Cut your towels into fourths.  If you would like you can hem the edges, but I like the look of the rough edges so I chose not to. (Don’t worry; they still hold up great even if you don’t hem them.)

Update:

  • We have been using these for a year now and they are still holding up great despite many washing and 3 rambunctious kids using them!

Step 2

Dip your stamps in the fabric paint and stamp onto towel.

Tips:

  • It is easier to control your paint if you use a paintbrush to apply it to the stamps, especially the flag. This will let you place the separate colors where you choose. If you’re not worried about it, you can simply dip your stamp.
  • If you notice, I chose to do one flag and a bunch of stars. Feel free to change it up and do whatever pattern you want.  You will notice a difference in the ones I stamped and the ones the kiddos did.

Step 3

Allow your paint to dry completely.

Tip:

  • If you let your children help with this project, the napkins that they stamp will take probably take longer to dry. Kids tend to stamp the paint on thicker.

Step 4

Once your napkins are completely dry, run them through the dryer on medium or high heat for a full cycle. This will help set the paint.

Step 5

One you have set the paint, you can wash and dry them as usual. Next, just use at your next gathering and enjoy!

The stamps you choose to use can vary the look of these greatly. I like the messy look of the Tim Holtz stamp because it reminds me of all our flag has been through. If you want a cleaner look, choose a flag stamp with large, clear lines. These patriotic napkins are so simple to make that you can get the kiddos involved in making them. Kids will love using a napkin that they helped create and they will be happy to show them off at your summer parties. Want more fun patriotic crafts?
