DIY Jack-O-Lantern Treat Jar

I am crazy excited for fall.  I love the leaves and sweatshirts along with all of the special, seasonal treats!  One of my favorite fall treats are what we call happy pumpkins.  That’s not their real name, but they are those Little Debbie treats that look like cute little jack-o-lanterns and taste like an autumn party in your mouth. (No, this is not a sponsored post I just really LOVE happy pumpkins.)

We just recently picked up our first box of the season and they needed an exciting container to be stored in.  What better way to store happy pumpkins than in a jack-o-lantern treat jar?

Step 1

Rip or cut scrapbook paper in half.  Then take one half and rip in half again.

Step 2

Remove lid from container and cover the can with Mod Podge.  Cover with pieces of scrapbook paper, alternating patterns.

Tip:

If the paper is a heavier weight and is not conforming to the container, use a paintbrush to wet it with water until it does.

Step 3

Cover entire container with second coat of Mod Podge.

Note: The container wasn’t coming out as orange as I wanted so I added a layer of tissue paper to help.  This will entirely depend on the scrapbook paper you use and the desired look you want to achieve.

Step 4

Add strips of black tissue paper to create the sections of the pumpkin.  Then add 2 eyes and a mouth.

Note:  I free-handed mine out of the black tissue paper.  If you need a template, a Google search will bring up tons you can use.

Step 5

While your jack-o-lantern is drying, cut your foam block in half.  Then carve one half to resemble a stem and seal with Mod Podge (this makes it easier to paint and keeps the foam from falling off).

Tip:

Don’t try to carve a perfect circle.  Stems are not even and will be more realistic if it is roughly carved.

Step 6

While stem is drying, paint the bottom of container black.  Once paint is dry, cover with a coat of Mod Podge to seal it.

Step 7

Paint a coat of dark brown on the entire stem.  Before it dries, add some detail to it with the white.

Tip:

If it dries too quickly and the white shows up too prominently, go over it again with the dark brown lightly.

Step 8

Remove 2 leaves from an old faux floral stem.  (The ones I used were one piece.)

Attach leaves to the bottom of your stem with hot glue and then attach the entire piece (stem and leaves) to the lid of the coffee container.

Easy DIY Curtains

If you work from home or do a lot of DIY projects, you know how important an office can be.  If you don’t have one (been there, done that) then the importance is highlighted even more.  I have recently been working on creating a joint office and crafting space and I’m finally getting around to the fun stuff like decorating.  The most recent project?  These super easy DIY curtains.

Materials (And Tools)

Step 1

Measure your window to determine how much fabric you need.

Tips:

  • Hang your curtain rod first.  You want it to be placed above the window at least a few inches and you want it to extend past the window on either side.  When you measure, do so from the curtain rod.  Also remember that you will want them to hang past your window as well.
  • When measuring the width, don’t just divide the total in half and add in an inch or two for hems.  You want some overlap once they are hung.  Add at least 4-6 extra inches to each panel to facilitate this.
  • When measuring length remember to add enough extra length to not only create hems but also the channel for the rod to go through.

Step 2

Measure and cut out your fabric based on the above measurements.

Tips:

  • The old adage holds true for this to ‘measure twice, cut once.’
  • To achieve a semi-blackout curtain without the extra work, use a heavyweight outdoor fabric.  They come in a myriad of styles and patterns to fit your décor.

Step 3

Create hems on the long edges of your panels and secure with pins.

Step 4

Sew each pinned hem.  Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the top and bottom of the panels.

Step 5

Create the channel for your curtain rod to slide through by essentially creating a second, extra-large hem at the top of each panel.  When you set it, be sure there is at least a 3-inch gap, bigger if your curtain rod is especially large.

Now just hang your panels and enjoy!  You can have stylish new curtains in as little as 10 minutes!

August is the start of a fresh planner in my house.  (Find out why here.) This year I’m actually changing from a smaller planner to an 8.5 x 11 planner.  These means needing a fresh new binder to hold it and the result is fantastic!  This DIY planner binder is so easy to make that you’ll want to start decorating all of your organizing binders.

Step 1

Tip: I chose to put a piece of paper in the top of the clear pocket on the cover of the binder to keep it from sealing.  If you don’t care if the pocket is usable, you don’t have to do this.

Put a coat of Mod Podge on the front cover of your binder.

Step 2

With the binder on a protected surface, pour a generous amount of glitter over the entire front cover.

Step 3

Shake off excess and allow to dry completely.

**Repeat steps 1 through 3 until achieving your desired look.

Step 4

Fill in any gaps or light areas there might be by covering the areas with more Mod Podge and covering with glitter. Allow to dry completely.

Step 5

Put a final coat of Mod Podge on to seal the glitter and allow it to dry completely.

Tip: If you are still having trouble with glitter coming off on your hands after applying the last coat, spray the cover with a sealant spray.

Step 6

Place a piece of paper or newspaper over the glittered area and secure in to place with painters tape.

Step 7

Open binder and place on a protected area with the covers facing up.  Spray paint it and allow paint to dry.

Tip: Depending on the color of your paint and the color of your binder, it could take multiple coats to cover.  The white binder I used took 2 full coats and one touch-up.

Step 8

Carefully remove the tape and paper covering the glitter.  Fill with your choice of printable planners (I recommend our awesome Family Planner this one is no longer available) and you’re ready to go.
