Boys Room Makeover : Painting the Walls and Ceiling

Last weekend I had all of Saturday to myself which is pretty much unheard of when you’re married with 3 kids. In true mom form, I took advantage of it by working. Haha!  That is not to say that I didn’t make the most of it by blasting my music or catching up on some Criminal Minds while painting the walls and ceiling. Do you want to know my new tip for painting walls quickly and efficiently? Kick everyone out of your house! You will be amazed at how productive you can be when you’re not constantly filling up sippy cups, locating lost items, and mediating arguments. Okay, that is not really the tip I want to share with you today but it will ratchet up your productivity. You can find the tips for any painting job in the tutorial below. They can be used even when your house is full of demanding little ones.

Step 1

Clear everything out of the room including anything on the walls, like décor and wall stickers.

Step 2

Remove all of the outlet and switch plate covers in the room.

Step 3

Next, clean the walls, baseboards, trim, and ceiling.

Tip:

  • This room hasn’t been painted in the 3 years since we moved in so it had 3 years’ worth of crayon, marker, and nail polish stains from tiny hands. There are tips for getting this off (toothpaste, magic erasers, etcetera) but this was roughly 4 feet high and all around the room except where furniture was. I chose to do what I could and then add an extra coat of paint necessary.

Step 4

Before you paint, measure how far down onto the wall that you want the “night sky” to come. Cut a square of cardboard to that size.

Step 5

Then use that square of cardboard to measure that line from the ceiling all the way around the room and mark it with your yellow highlighter.

Step 6

As I said above, I didn’t use painters tape but if you do, this is the step to tape everything up.

Step 7

Next, throw down your drop cloth and start painting the lower walls.

Step 8

Paint one coat of paint with the roller up to the highlighter line on the walls.

Note:

  • I used Valspar Signature Interior Paint and Primer in One and I was amazed at how well it covered all of those crayon, marker, and nail polish stains in one coat!

Step 9

Fill in any corners and edges using your paint brush.

Step 10

Allow your first coat of paint to dry.

Step 11

Next add your second coat of paint and allow it to dry before moving on.

Step 12

After your wall paint is dry, paint your first coat of paint on the ceiling and the tops of the walls.

Step 13

Again, fill in any corners and edges with paint.

Step 14

Allow the first coat of ceiling paint to dry completely.

Step 15

Next, add a second coat of paint to the ceiling and the tops of the walls. Let it dry and you are done painting.

Step 16

Remove all of your tape and re-attach outlet and switch plate covers.

This is easily the longest part of the makeover. Even with an entire Saturday alone, painting the walls and ceiling took all weekend, if you don’t really have the spare time over the weekends to undertake these types of mortification, you might want to explore, NYC painters. One the plus side, I have eaten the frog as Mark Twain would say, and it is all downhill from here. Next, I am adding trim between the ceiling and wall color. After that I will add glow stars to the ceiling. Check out the Boys Room Makeover to see the other awesome projects coming your way. See you next week with the next room update!

DIY Family Chores Wall System for Busy Families

Have you started getting ready for the school year yet? We are pretty lax with our schedule during the summer. Bedtimes are pushed back. The days are less structured. It is a fun and relaxing time of year. It is because of this that it is important to plan ahead for the school year. We need to get back into the structured rhythm that comes along with it. Part of that is getting an updated list of daily tasks that need to be completed each day. Another part of getting ready is creating organization systems that keep us on track and make life easier. That is exactly what this DIY family chores wall system does.

Step 1

Remove any packaging that is on your pan.

Tip:

  • If your pan’s label is attached with glue, you will want to clean any excess sticky off of it before continuing.

Step 2

Cover the top of the pan with one color of acrylic paint.

Tips:

  • I only did one coat of paint because I like the look of the metal showing through. If you want a solidly colored chart, add a second coat of paint after the first coat dries.
  • Use a different color of paint on each pan to make it easier to recognize whose pan each is.

Step 3

Let the paint dry completely before moving on.

Step 4

Carefully put a washi tape grid on your pan as pictured above.

Tip:

  • You need to be careful and precise during this step because your pan has not been sealed yet. The paint will chip if you try to reposition the washi tape or scratch it with jewelry.

Step 5

Next, paint “Tasks”, “Ø”, and “√” in the respective areas using white acrylic paint.

Step 6

After your white paint has dried, seal your pan with engine enamel paint.

Step 7

While you wait on the enamel to dry, pull out your Post-It notes.

Step 8

Next, cut the sticky part off of the Post-It notes.

Step 9

Cut the sticky strip in half.

Step 10

Then write the tasks that need to be completed each day on the papers and stick one in each grid on the left.

Step 11

Next, add a hook to the right handle of your pan.

Step 12

Repeat steps 1 through 11 for each family member.

Step 13

Hang your family chores wall system using Command picture strips.

Step 14

Add bucket to the hooks for storage.

Note:

  • We didn’t add hooks or buckets to the youngest kids’ pans because they don’t really need the storage yet. I don’t want to risk them losing the buckets so I have them and the hooks put up for now.

Step 15

Lastly, add magnetic pins to track the completion of tasks.

With this DIY family chores wall system you can easily keep track of daily tasks. In addition, you can have homework supplies at children’s fingertips in the buckets. You can also use the buckets to hold your Daily Workout Sticks like I do. The extra space on the right side lets you keep track of notes, appointments, and permission slips. We also chose to add photo magnets from Shutterfly to label each chart. This makes it easy for little ones to know which charts belong to them and provides an extra magnet to hold notes. This is definitely an all-encompassing system that will have your family ready for back to school.
