Pirates and Mermaid Sibling Costumes

This year is a huge Halloween year for our family. For the first time ever all 5 of us are coordinating our costumes. Every year that I have wanted to do this, all of my awesome ideas (like an Alice in Wonderland theme) have been shot down. The kids wanted to go as their favorite super hero or cartoon character. When baby girl decided she wanted to be a mermaid I immediately thought, “The boys can totally go as pirates!” It was all downhill from there (in the best way). The kids are just as excited as I am about these pirates and mermaid sibling costumes… okay, almost as excited as I am.

Mermaid Costume

This Little Mermaid costume is easy and adorable. It even comes with the cute headband pictured on Oriental Trading. Baby girl had plenty of mobility in the costume. She was able to sit down in it while getting her face painted and she took the steps later with no problem.

Mermaid Face Paint

Materials

Step 1

Start by adding green around the eyes with the large brush from your kit. It will kind of look like dragon wings at first (but will become cool fins in the end).

Tip:

  • Dip your brush in water before adding paint for smoother lines and better coverage.

Step 2

Next, rinse off the brush and brush it in the purple shimmer paint.

Step 3

Add the purple shimmer paint over the green face paint.

Step 4

Then add a purple shell between the eyebrows, as pictured.

Step 5

Next, add half circles in a scale pattern on the forehead. Start at the hairline and work down towards the shell.

Step 6

Now, rinse your brush and add white paint to it.

Step 7

Add white accents to the paint around the eyes and on the nose. See the picture for reference.

Step 9

Trace around the edge of your half circles on the forehead with white paint.

Step 10

Mix a small amount of green and a larger amount of purple paint on your hand.

Step 11

Add the mixed color to the scales on the forehead.

Tip:

  • If the paint on your hand starts to dry simply dip your brush in water, again, before brushing it into the paint.

Step 12 (Optional)

If you would like, add some more white embellishments extending from the shell.

Step 13

Lastly, add glitter to the paint around the eyes using your finger

Tip:

  • If it starts to mix and get a green tint, wipe your finger on your wrist and re-dip in the glitter.

Toddler Pirate Costume

The toddler costume is only the top but when you add some black sweatpants, you have an economical and awesome costume. The best sweatpants to use are the ones with the elastic ankles. Pull the ankles up to just under the knees and you have instant breeches.

Toddler Pirate Face Paint

**This uses the same materials as the mermaid face paint.

Step 1

Paint a line of black face paint at an angle across the forehead.

Tip:

  • Make sure that the downward angle comes across the eyebrow.

Step 2

Add a semi-circle coming down from the line around the eye. Do this on the downward side of the angle.

Step 3

Next, fill in the circle and take care not to get it in the eye.

Note:

  • This is especially difficult with a squirmy toddler but take heart. We have successfully completed this twice.

Step 4

Lastly, add a mustache and goatee to complete the look.

Child Pirate Costume

The child’s Jack Sparrow costume is the complete package. It includes the shirt, breeches, belts, and bandanna with hair. How cool is that? Seriously, it doesn’t get more cost-efficient than this costume.

Child Pirate Face Paint

**This also uses the same materials as the mermaid face paint.

Step 1

Start by painting a full beard with brown paint using short, downward strokes.

Step 2

Rinse your brush and add black paint to it.

Step 3

Next, add the black to the beard.

Step 4

Again, rinse your brush and add white paint to it.

Step 5

Lastly, add the white paint to the beard.

Step 6 (Optional)

I wasn’t planning on adding an eye patch to this costume but he wanted one so I did. Follow the steps for the toddler costume to paint it.

Now your kids can have a hands-free treat collector this Halloween. This DIY glowing pirate trick-or-treat bag is also great in case you end up having to carry it for the younger children while the older ones finish trick-or-treating. There is a 5 year gap between our oldest and youngest child. The 8 year old lasts much longer than the 3 year old as is expected. When that happens, I can throw this bag on my back and still have free hands and arms for the wee ones. Come back tomorrow to see the coordinating costumes for this bag and get some great face painting tutorials! See you then! **Update** The costumes and face paint will go live on Monday. Thanks!!
