You’ve been there: you’re at the store with your kid and she simply has to have that awesome item she’s just laid eyes on. Most of the time you say no and move on with her pouting until she sees the next thing she just Has. To. Have. Occasionally it is a small trinket, a 25¢ bangle for example, and you say yes. I did this at the thrift store the other day and purchased a cheap (and frankly kind of ugly) red bangle. Once we got home and were putting away items. I tried to hand her the new bangle. Guys, I kid  you not, she looked at me, crossed her arms, and said, “I don’t want that bracelet.” Ahh, such is life with a 4 year old. Instead of tossing it I decided to make it something beautiful to wear. That is exactly what this gold monogram bracelet is!

Step 1

Remove any price tags if you bought your bangle. Next, quickly clean it using soap and water.

Step 2

Cover your work surface with newspaper and paint your first coat of paint on your bangle. Remember to paint the inside of the bangle as well. Let dry.

Step 3

Paint a second coat of paint on your bangle. Again, allow it to dry.

Step 4 (Optional)

You may need a third coat of paint depending on the color of your bangle. This one was red so I opted for a 3rd coat.

Step 5

Cut a small piece of gold wire large enough to loosely wrap around your bangle twice.

Step 6

Place your charm on the piece of wire.

Step 7

Wrap your wire around the bangle twice with the overlapping ends on the inside.

Tips:

  • Make sure that the wrapped wire is loose enough for the charm to slide some.
  • Before you wrap your wire ensure correct way. You don’t want to put your bangle on and find that your letter is backwards.

Step 8 (Optional)

If the ends of your wire don’t quite overlap you will want to bend the tips towards the bangle. This will prevent them from poking you during wear.

Isn’t this such an improvement? The thrift bangle has been transformed from something I wouldn’t look twice at into something stunning. Plus you can’t beat the 25¢ price tag since I already had all of the other elements. One last tip before you check out the other great makeovers below: if your bangle is larger, like an inch wide or more, you will want to choose a larger charm. The delicate charm is perfect for this size but would be swallowed up by a larger bangle.

DIY Golden Twig Crown

Floral crowns are gorgeous! They are such an easy and fun way to dress up any hairstyle. That makes them absolutely perfect for busy moms. Unfortunately, finding the perfect flowers to match your fall outfits can be difficult. The bulky flowers can also be too much for your autumn layers and boots. That doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a season of top knots and yoga pants (not that that is always a bad thing). Instead, take your fall hair from blah to wow with this easy DIY golden twig crown.

Materials

Step 1

Thicker twigs that are not pliable need to be curved to make them form to the headband without breaking. Luckily, you can do this in 3 easy steps.

  1. Place your twigs in a container and cover with water. Weigh the twigs down with something if necessary.
  2. Soak the twigs for 12 to 24 hours.
  3. Carefully add the twigs to a round container one at a time. Allow them to dry completely.

Step 2

Choose one of your longer twigs to add to the headband. Begin attaching it with your floral wire.

Tips:

  • I don’t recommend swapping out the floral wire for anything else that you simply have on hand. I started this project using Soft Illusion Cord to attach the twigs. It was too difficult to tighten and secure while also holding the twig in place.
  • Don’t worry if your twig doesn’t completely cover your headband. You can add a second one to cover the rest. That’s what I had to do and it still turned out awesome.
  • Also, leave an inch or so on either end of the headband. This lets it slip more easily into your hair.

Step 3

Continue attaching your twig with the wire. You do not need to cover the entire twig. Using the wire every couple of inches will suffice.

Step 4

If your first twig does not cover your headband, add a second one now.

Step 5

Once your base twig or twigs are attached start adding additional twigs. These ones can be attached with hot glue.

Tip:

  • You will want to break these twigs into smaller pieces. This is what keeps them from coming off when you stretch the headband to place it on your head.

Step 6

Continue adding twigs to your headband until you achieve your desired look.

Step 7

Allow all of the hot glue to dry completely. This shouldn’t take too long.

Step 8

Cover your entire crown with gold spray paint.

Tips:

  • You will need to do this one side at a time unless you have a way to suspend the headband while painting.
  • If you choose not to prime the crown as I did, you will need to do 2 coats of paint for the best color result.

Step 9
