Art of the Brick Date Night

You already know that date nights are important. They allow you to reconnect with your husband and get away from the demands of everyday life. However, you may also believe that these date nights should always be something that you both already enjoy. In fact, it can be better for your relationship to push outside of your comfort zone. The easiest way to do this is to take turns with your husband when it comes to choosing date night activities. Not only will you possibly find new hobbies to enjoy together but you will also help foster feelings of valuableness in your relationship. This exact strategy is how I discovered (and fell in love with) Lego art when my husband’s choice took us to Art of the Brick.

Art of the Brick

Admittedly, I didn’t do any research on the exhibit before we went. I assumed it was about how Legos were made and the kits were designed. Boy was I wrong. It is in fact a gorgeous art exhibit from the artist, Nathan Sawaya. (If you can’t make it to see the exhibit in person, you can check out his book here.) It is broken up into sections that house like themes of art with each section magnificent in its own right.

**The following categories are simply the names I have given the sections for the purpose of division within this post.

Classic Recreations

Having studied art and art history, I was blown away by how he recreated famous works of art. He even took into account texture as with the cave painting below.

Sculptures

The feat of creating these sculptures is absolutely incredible. Not simply that they are instantly recognizable by those familiar with them but also that they are structurally sound. These are not small sculptures by any means. In fact, you can see amazing scale of them in some of the photos.

Realism

To recreate real-life structures is extremely difficult. We see the items every day and because of this, you recognize flaws in them more easily. However, these pieces are all incredible.

Abstract

The best part of all of the abstract art is the explanations that went along with the pieces. Nathan uses his art to express a keen insight into human nature.

Dark

This section, while equally as insightful as the abstract, seemed a bit dark for young children. There are sculptures that have their faces removed or skulls on the wall. While the meanings behind them are very true representations, the images themselves could be unsettling for little ones.

Photography

This is a fascinating concept that I had never seen before. Nathan created Lego sculptures of items that a photographer then Photo shopped into staged photographs. My absolute favorite was the red dress however all of it is stunning and impressive.

There were a few exhibits that didn’t really fall into any category and we contained on their own. I personally love that he included a nod to Cincinnati (which is where we saw the exhibit). I don’t know if he does this for every city but it would be neat to see the creations if he does.

If this exhibit comes anywhere near you I absolutely recommend visiting it. The stunning exhibits and ambient setting make it perfect for a date night. You will also learn more about your husband and possibly about yourself. You will find out what types of art truly draw each of you in. You will discover which facts about the pieces are interesting to each of you. You may even be like me and learn that you are in fact a giant weepy girl when you start crying happy tears at the kids’ displayed creations at the end of the main exhibits. Organizing Your Planner and a Birthday Party

The busier you get the faster time seems to go. If you’re not organizing your time, you are losing it. A planner is the best, and might I say prettiest, way to organize your time. However, a planner can help with more than just your schedule. If you’re like me, you operate best when everything is in one place. To celebrate DIY Adulation’s first birthday, here are my tips for organizing your planner as well as a giveaway to give you all of the tools you need to do so.

Your Planner

Choose a planner that works for you. My personal favorite is the Happy Planner which I have been using for a year now. There are a ton of reasons I love it but the biggest reasons are:

  1. It is easily expandable.
  2. It can be folded completely in half due to its unique disc system.

Your Responsibilities

It is important to consider what your household responsibilities are when organizing your planner. If you take care of the cleaning and cooking in your household then you need sections in your planner for keeping track of these. With the Happy Planner, you actually have 2 options for achieving this.

  1. You can buy the Home Planner set which is what I have (and totally recommend).
  2. With their awesome punch, you can create your own. Simply design you planning and organizational pages. Next, punch them and place in your planner.

Accessories

Let’s be fair: the accessories are the most fun part of your planner. They make it unique. They make it yours. Some of the accessories I use are:

Your Sections

At the very least, you should have monthly and weekly calendars. Put your important events on the monthly calendar so you can see everything at a glance. It is important to note that you need to make sure you move these items to your weekly calendar as soon as they come up. You don’t want to plan out your week and forget about an obligation you have.

Case

A case for your planner makes the entire organizational process so much easier. That is the one regret that I have. I wish I would have bought my planner case sooner. It is so convenient to have all of my supplies in one place. I’ll show you how I organize my case in a later post but for now, trust me, this is definitely worth the investment.

A Peek Inside My Planner

My planner has to work overtime for me. I tried having separate planners for both my blog and my personal life but it just didn’t work for me. I need everything in one place. That’s another reason that I love my Happy Planner. Now, I am more effective because everything is organized and at my fingertips.

My Dashboards

  • I use 2 of my 3 dashboards. One holds post ideas that I want to write. The other holds appointment sticky notes and the tops items on my to-do list.

Monthly Calendar

  • Those post ideas I talk about on my dashboards? I put those on my monthly calendar. This is excellent for bloggers especially. It allows you to rearrange your editorial calendar as necessary. For example, if a sponsored post comes up.

Weekly Calendar

  • On the weekly calendar, I lay out my daily schedule. It is important not to do this more than a week in advance because of how quickly things on your schedule can change. The Happy Planner allows me to block my activities and responsibilities into morning, afternoon, and evening categories. This is incredibly helpful when blocking things such as doctor’s appointments and kids’ activities onto the weekly calendar.

Cleaning Schedule

  • I love the daily cleaning checklist that comes with the Home Planner set. There is plenty of room for me to add my own cleaning tasks and the basic ones already included are helpful and relevant. This can be a life-saver for staying on top of the household clutter.

Meal Planner

  • The last important section I include in my planner is the meal planner. It has a calendar for scheduling your meals and it also have an itemized shopping list. We like to have use a dry erase board on the fridge for our grocery list so, instead, I use the shopping list to keep track of what we have available for meals. It is my pantry and freezer list.

The Home Planner set also includes a budget section. If you do yours on pen and paper, this is excellent. I keep track of ours electronically so this isn’t a section used in my planner. One last thing I want to point out is that your can get expander rings to enlarge your planner (you can see mine in the photos above). These are perfect when you need a lot of items in your planner, like me. Whew! That was a lot of information to cover and those are just the highlights. It is time for the birthday celebration, though, so here it is! Help celebrate the One Year Anniversary of DIY Adulation where you could get the gifts. 8 Reasons This is the Best Family Investment

There are a lot of things I look forward to during the summer.  Number one is definitely more time with my family.  During the school year, everyone is so busy and we are very constricted by schedules, holidays, and pretty much just life.  The summer offers us more freedom to explore, play, and get messy.  I love it. One of our absolute favorite summer activities is going to the zoo. If you think the zoo is just about seeing animals, you need to check it out again. We go at least a couple of times a week. I’m not an animal lover by any means, but there is just something about visiting the majestic creatures there.  It is incredible and entertaining. However, there are so many other amazing activities, photo ops, and general fun to be had at the zoo outside of the animals!   The best part is that most zoo passes aren’t very expensive. That is why a zoo pass is the best summer family investment.

Find out why this is the single best family investment! Spend more time with your family and make thousands of memories on a small budget!

1. Free Shows and Concerts

Zoos often have free shows and concerts throughout the year. The Cincinnati Zoo has Tunes and Blooms every week in April which is weekly, after hours free concert. We’ve also been to other shows during the year that were 100% free and family friendly. A few years ago we attended a fun Avenger’s show that our oldest son absolutely loved!

2. There are Tons of Photo Ops

There are countless places for amazing photo opportunities. Some of them the kids love so much that you can look back at all of the photos later and watch them grow up. It is incredibly special and a wonderful keepsake to create. Last year, we even received a FREE professional (and printed) family photo for member’s appreciation night!

3. Member’s Appreciation

Most zoos offer some sort of member appreciation. At the Cincinnati Zoo they have a specific night dedicated to it. There are tons of perks including the photo mentioned above. You also receive amazing discounts on face painting, food, and more. Plus some fun freebies and activities are included on top of the regular zoo activities.

4. Rides and Playgrounds

There are also rides and play areas in the zoo. Kids will always enjoy the train, the merry-go-round, and the playground. Some zoos, like ours, even offer 3D theaters!

5. Learning Opportunities

As you would imagine, the zoo is packed with learning opportunities. There are interactive animal centers and fun facts plastered everywhere. You can learn about more than just animals at the zoo, too. For example, our zoo had a real food garden for a few years that was a lot of fun for the kids.

6. Animal Encounters

From special animal encounters set up throughout the zoo where kids can actually get up close and pet the animals to the regularly scheduled ones, there are lots of ways to engage with the animals. We have pet snakes, alligators, penguins, and more. We have fed and brushed goats. These are wonderful experiences that your kids will cherish as they grow.

Find out why this is the single best family investment! Spend more time with your family and make thousands of memories on a small budget!

7. Special Events

Zoos also hold special events around holidays. At Easter, kids can stop by stations placed throughout the zoo and receive treats as well as get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. In October there is trick-or-treat every weekend. Also, the zoo is open year-round. In the winter, our zoo has the Festival of Lights which is fun and gorgeous. We have met Mr. and Mrs. Gingerbread and sipped on free cocoa while enjoying the beautiful lights all over.

Find out why this is the single best family investment! Spend more time with your family and make thousands of memories on a small budget!

8. Save on Food

Another important thing to point out is that you save even more by choosing the zoo because you can bring in your own food. We always pack lunch, snacks, and drinks so we are set for the whole trip. Another little tip for you is to bring some sort of small treat, like a sucker, because if you walk by some ice cream or cotton candy but aren’t going to buy any, you can pull out the surprise treat. Your kids will love it!

Again, all of this is included with a zoo pass which is good for 12 months from the date you get it.  We pay a little less than $200 for our season pass which gets in 2 named adults, plus 2 adult guests, and up to 8 children each visit.  It also covers our parking which can run around $9 a visit.  Compared with theme parks, aquariums, and museums this is an incredible deal. A couple hundred dollars for a year’s worth of fun, activities, and family memories? Absolutely worth it. Looking for other summer ideas?  Check out our summer page!

In case you’re wondering, I have not been compensated in any way for this post.  My family just truly enjoys visiting the zoo as much as possible.  We go all year long and the benefits have been innumerable. I want to help you make the most of your money and time which I feel a zoo pass absolutely does.
