DIY Wooden Geometric Fox Wall Art

This week we are continuing to move forward with the boys room makeover. The kids love seeing it all start to come together. I am also super excited because the storage piece I ordered has arrived, as well. Of course, you know that I have to tweak it some. That is just what a chronic DIY-er does. The storage post will be coming your way soon. Today, however, as promised we are making this awesome DIY wooden geometric fox wall art. It is inspired by the metal wall art available at Hobby Lobby but I wanted to create something a little more rustic.

Materials

Step 1

First, bake your collected sticks in the oven at 250ºF for 1-2 hours.

Tip:

  • You can place them straight on the oven rack.

Step 2

Let the sticks cool before working with them.

Step 3

While your sticks cool, pull out your laminated mat.

Tips:

  • Parchment paper will be easy to pull off of your glued sticks but you will have to get a new sheet to draw your fox on if you mess up.
  • The laminated mat is more tedious to remove the artwork from but you can wash off any drawing mistakes you make with the marker.

Step 4

Next, draw the bottom of your fox face as pictured.

Step 5

Continue drawing the outline of your fox face and the ears.

Tip:

  • Make sure your lines are straight. You do not want any curved lines.

Step 6

Then fill in the interior lines, eyes, and nose of the fox.

Step 8

Step 9

Next, start gluing the joints with that glue.

Step 10

Continue adding glue until all of your joints are secured.

Tips:

  • Some joints may need to be held together until the glue has begun to cool.
  • If your sticks are not straight it causes the joints not to line up well for gluing. Add small pieces of stick underneath that curved piece at the joints to strengthen the glue bonds.

Step 12

Add the eyes and nose then allow the glue to dry completely.

Step 13

Next, carefully remove the fox from your mat.

Tip:

  • I used the tiny spatula from this kit to get under the glue in some spots.

Step 14

Repair any areas that come apart or weaken during removal and let the glue dry

Materials

This DIY woodland explore artwork is super easy to make. With some paint and glue you will have a unique piece of décor for your children’s room.

Step 1

First, cover your stretched canvas with black acrylic paint.

Tip:

  • Don’t worry too much about painting the edges because they will be covered later in the project.

Step 2

Next, use a ruler to draw 2 parallel lines that are 10 inches long and 3 inches apart.

Tip:

  • If you make a mistake, do not erase it. If you do then you will mess up the black background. Simply re-draw the lines correctly and we will fix mistakes later.

Step 3

Add triangles and lines at each end as pictured above step 2 to turn them into arrows.

Tip:

  • Again, do not erase any mistakes.

Step 4

Draw the word “EXPLORE” centered above your arrows. (The picture already has green paint to show you the difference between the messed up area and corrected area.)

Tip:

  • This is an excellent example of not erasing your mistakes. The first time I drew “EXPLORE” it wasn’t centered so I had to re-do it.

Step 5

Next, cover the pencil lines of the word “EXPLORE” with green paint.
