When we started creating out coasters the plan was to have the kids draw directly on the coasters. That worked great for the youngest who mostly just scribbles anyway, but the middle one struggled with it. In fact, she got so frustrated that she scribbled out her frustration. You can check out her angry scribbles in the photo below. That frustration is what inspired me to transfer images she drew on paper to the wooden coasters, instead. Live and learn…

Step 1

Fold a piece of paper into fourths and give it to your child along with a pencil. Let him or her know only to draw on the fourths. This will help make sure that the drawings fit on the coasters.

Step 2

Next, cut the fourths apart.

Step 4

Next carefully align the pictures over the coaster and trace over the drawing lines.

Tip:

  • Older kids can do this step on their own but I recommend mom doing this step for the little ones.

Step 5

Add each child’s first initial to the corresponding drawings on the coasters.

Place your coasters in a well-ventilated area and spray with your clear engine paint. Allow the paint to dry.

Note:

  • The engine paint can withstand extreme temperatures making it perfect for durable coasters.

Step 9

Next, flip your coasters over and spray the back as well to fully seal them.

Step 1

First, give each child a blank koozie.

Step 2

Next, open up your fabric markers and divvy them up between the kids.

Tip:

  • I recommend using at least 2 sets of markers to prevent fighting over colors.

Step 3

Now, let your kids go nuts decorating the can koozies.

Notes:

  • These markers hold up to my rough and tough little man which is awesome!
  • While the older kids will take their time the younger ones will fly through their decorating. If they finish before the other kids, allow them to move onto decorating their tie cards.

  • Bonus Tip: be sure to point out which end is the bottom of the koozie. I did not and you can see that baby girl decorated one of hers’ upside down. I think I’m just going to tell Papa that it’s so he can see the design when he takes a drink. Lol!

Step 4

After the kids have finished decorating their can koozies, label the bottom of each one with his or her first initial and the year.

Step 5

Lastly, throw them in the dryer on the highest heat setting for 30 minutes to set the designs.

Tips:

  • Do not wash them before setting the designs.
  • Don’t put anything else in the dryer with your koozies when you set them.

Father’s Day Gift Bag Materials

Step 1

Give each kid a tie card. If you have more gifts to give than kids decorating, give the kids more ties to color. You will need one tie for each gift bag.

Tips:

  • We used crayons on ours and the coating on the cards made it very difficult. That is why I recommended markers in the materials list.

Step 2

Push the metal end on the elastic cord through the pre-punched hole on the top of the card.

Step 5

Lastly, attach your tie card to one gift bag handle by tying the elastic cord in a slipknot around the top.

Step 6 (Optional)

After putting your gifts in the bags, top each one with 2-3 pieces of tissue paper.

Fallout Guy Can Koozie

My husband is super into the Fallout games. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it is a post-apocalyptic shooter game. I personally don’t get the draw of it but then again, he doesn’t understand my love of the Sims. He loves it when we find merchandise with the little dude on it. That’s why I decided to surprise him with a hand-drawn one on a can koozie. You can check out the quick photo tutorial below to see how I made it. Keep in mind that I free handed the drawing so there is no pattern.

Note:

  • I used the pink fabric marker to color the skin. Do this very lightly.
