On Tuesday you saw the awesome Art of the Brick Date Night post (and if you didn’t, you should totally check it out). It is possible, though, that you can’t go. This could be because the exhibit isn’t going to be at a city near you. It could also simply be that you don’t have a sitter readily available. Fear not! Just because you can’t visit the exhibit doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the fun. Here are five awesome Lego date night ideas that you can enjoy right at home!

Create Lego Art

You can keep with the Art of the Brick theme and try to create your own art. Find a picture of a famous work of art online. Have a decent selection of Legos available for this. Next, you and your husband try to recreate the work of art. Guaranteed that even if your works of art totally such, you will still have a great time with a lot of laughs. If that seems too ambitious for you, here are a couple of other options for creating Lego art are:

• Create your own abstract art (preferably based on some random item in the room). Once you’ve finished, take turns guessing what the “inspiration” for the piece was. Feel free to make this as hard for your husband as you’d like. It can be a lot more laughs that way.
• Create castles, houses, or some other structure. You can do this as a team or individually. Once you’ve created your structures, test their durability by trying different methods of destruction on them. If you’ve built your structures separately, make it a competition by seeing who’s lasts the longest.

Movie Night

Have a movie night with your husband and watch The Lego Movie. Complete the night with Lego themed treats like these:

• Lego Rice Krispies
• Pizza Lego
• Lego Sandwiches
• Lego Brownies
• Brick Candy
• Chocolate Legos

If you really want to go all out, put pink and blue streaks in your hair and give hubs an orange construction vest like Emmet wears.

Play a Lego Game

Have you played any of the Lego board games yet? Some of them are pretty awesome. My absolute favorite is Creationary because of the creativity involved but there are others that are fun, too. Here are a few awesome ones to get you started:

Lego Pirate Code: This is a logic game in which you try to guess your opponents’ codes before they guess yours.

Lego Magikus: This one is a very simple game with the end goal to cast your magic spell first.

Lego Kingdoms Chess Set: If you want to keep it classic, you can’t go wrong with Lego chess. This set is a little pricey but amazingly cool.

 

Catapults

This is a fun activity is you want to test your creative genius as well as add some friendly competition. Each of you builds a catapult using only Legos and rubber bands. Next, set your creations side by side and launch a mini figure. The person whose mini figure goes the furthest is the winner. After the competition, try building a super-catapult together. See if you can launch a mini figure across the living room as a team.

Assemble a Kit

This is actually a team-building exercise sometimes used in couple’s therapy. Find a Lego kit to put together as a team. If you’re not super Lego builders, it is perfectly okay to start with a Duplo kit. Try to choose one that is difficult enough to warrant reading the instructions to build it. Outside of that, anything goes.

 

Now you have no excuse not to have an awesome Lego date night with your husband. The best part is that if you invest in a couple of these items now, you can use them for multiple date nights. You already know that date nights are important. They allow you to reconnect with your husband and get away from the demands of everyday life. However, you may also believe that these date nights should always be something that you both already enjoy. In fact, it can be better for your relationship to push outside of your comfort zone. The easiest way to do this is to take turns with your husband when it comes to choosing date night activities. Not only will you possibly find new hobbies to enjoy together but you will also help foster feelings of valuableness in your relationship. This exact strategy is how I discovered (and fell in love with) Lego art when my husband’s choice took us to Art of the Brick.

Art of the Brick

Admittedly, I didn’t do any research on the exhibit before we went. I assumed it was about how Legos were made and the kits were designed. Boy was I wrong. It is in fact a gorgeous art exhibit from the artist, Nathan Sawaya. (If you can’t make it to see the exhibit in person, you can check out his book here.) It is broken up into sections that house like themes of art with each section magnificent in its own right.

**The following categories are simply the names I have given the sections for the purpose of division within this post.

 

Classic Recreations

Having studied art and art history, I was blown away by how he recreated famous works of art. He even took into account texture as with the cave painting below.

 

Sculptures

The feat of creating these sculptures is absolutely incredible. Not simply that they are instantly recognizable by those familiar with them but also that they are structurally sound. These are not small sculptures by any means. In fact, you can see amazing scale of them in some of the photos.

 

 

Realism

To recreate real-life structures is extremely difficult. We see the items every day and because of this, you recognize flaws in them more easily. However, these pieces are all incredible.

 

Abstract

The best part of all of the abstract art is the explanations that went along with the pieces. Nathan uses his art to express a keen insight into human nature.

 

Dark

This section, while equally as insightful as the abstract, seemed a bit dark for young children. There are sculptures that have their faces removed or skulls on the wall. While the meanings behind them are very true representations, the images themselves could be unsettling for little ones.

 

Photography

This is a fascinating concept that I had never seen before. Nathan created Lego sculptures of items that a photographer then Photo shopped into staged photographs. My absolute favorite was the red dress however all of it is stunning and impressive.

 

 

 

Uncategorized

There were a few exhibits that didn’t really fall into any category and we contained on their own. I personally love that he included a nod to Cincinnati (which is where we saw the exhibit). I don’t know if he does this for every city but it would be neat to see the creations if he does.

 

Tips for Attending

• Go Slow: Our museum only let in a specific number of people at a time but you do not have to remain in that group once you’re inside. In fact, I recommend letting your group pass you. It is easier to get a closer look at the exhibits if you are not competing with your group. In fact, we let several groups pass us as we truly took our time and perused the exhibits.
• Kids: Again, if you choose to take your kids (although not on your date night) some exhibits may not be suitable. There weren’t options to avoid those exhibits completely but they are all contained in one section. This makes it easy to usher them quickly through those.
• Allot Your Time: There are fun stations at the end of the art exhibits to build your own Lego creations. This can be a fun way to cut loose with your husband so be sure to save time during your date to include this section.

 

If this exhibit comes anywhere near you I absolutely recommend visiting it. The stunning exhibits and ambient setting make it perfect for a date night. You will also learn more about your husband and possibly about yourself. You will find out what types of art truly draw each of you in. You will discover which facts about the pieces are interesting to each of you. You may even be like me and learn that you are in fact a giant weepy girl when you start crying happy tears at the kids’ displayed creations at the end of the main exhibits.
