Princess and the Pony Painted Sweater Craft

Reading with your child is such an important activity. It brings you closer, improves his or her skills, and provides many opportunities for important conversations. That is why I take part in the Monthly Crafting Book Club every month. (You can see previous months on the Kid Crafts page.) The book for this month is The Princess and the Pony. I had never heard of this book before but I must say that it is spectacular! The story is adorable and the illustrations even more so. The best part is that it easily lends itself to this fun and messy painted sweater craft!

Your kids will love making this painted sweater craft after reading The Princess and the Pony. They will love wearing it and showing it off even more. While they are creating it, take the opportunity to ask them if they have ever been disappointed in a gift they received. Ask them how they handled it and if they eventually enjoyed it. Follow up the questions by telling them about a time you were upset by a gift you received and how you dealt with it. Organize Personal Information Now

There is nothing more frustrating than needing an important document and not being able to find it. If you don’t have your information organized chances are this is a frustration you deal with frequently. When you are enrolling kids in school, getting a passport, or doing a myriad of other things you need your personal and medical documents. You also want to make sure that you are always prepared for unexpected emergencies. That is why it is so important for you to organize personal information now and these tips will help you do just that.

Pick Your Storage for organizing your personal information

This is the easiest part of organizing your important information. Choose how you are going to store. You can use a binder for this but you may have to have multiple, itemized binders to hold all of the information you need to store.

You can also use a file box, which is what I now use. Not only is this portable, it is also helps keep your paperwork under control because you only have a limited space in which to store it.

I don’t recommend using a large file cabinet for your staple documents (like birth certificates) because of portability. If you watch Agents of the Shield, picture when they make a “large file transfer” and toss the huge file cabinet out the window. This is great for television but not so much for family emergencies.

If you want to use a file cabinet for storage be sure to only store paperwork you wouldn’t need immediately following an emergency in it and use something smaller to store the emergency information so you can grab and go. To recap, here are the 3 common storage options:

What to Include

The information and items you want to include will vary by individual families. However, everything you need to store will fall into 4 basic categories: personal, career, home/vehicle, and financial. To help you out, here are some basic examples of what to include broken down by category.

Personal

Career

Home/Vehicle

Financial

Safety Tips for Organizing personal information

It is always a good idea to back up your information. Scan in copies of birth certificates, social security cards, and other personal documents. You also want to keep digital copies of your tax returns and military orders. In addition to saving digital copies here are a couple more tips for keeping your information safe:

  1. Keep additional copies of birth certificates in a secondary safe place in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. Ask a parent or trusted family member to store the copies for you or rent a safe deposit box at your bank.
  2. You should never store your social security card in your wallet. A thief will have everything he or she needs to steal your identity between your driver’s license and social security card.

Know exactly where the information you need is located when you follow the steps above. Take the time to organize your information now and you will be prepared with the paperwork your kids will need for back to school. Make a hectic time of year a little easier for your family.

In addition to that, you have also prepared for multiple emergencies by storing them in something you can carry out the door and by making it easy to procure replacements quickly when needed. Get more organizing tips before you go with Organizing Your Life A to Z.

Patriotic Firecracker Wands

Let’s face it: wands are cool. Whether you are a fairy princess or off to Hogwarts, there is nothing better than twirling that pretty little stick in the air and adding a bit of magic to life. I will be 30 years old this year and I still get giddy when I see a sweet new wand to play with. You may not share my childlike joy of these toys but your kids certainly do. Keep them entertained before the fireworks show with these awesome (and totally shiny) patriotic firecracker wands.

Cut a strip of silver garland the length of your straw.

Step 3

Next, cut three strips each of the red and blue gift ribbon. These should also be cut the length of your straw.

Step 4

Wrap the end of your garland around the end of all 6 strands of ribbon.

Tip:

  • Only wrap the garland once or twice around the ribbon and securely tighten. Next, bed the excess wire (the shorter piece) away from the wrap and towards the shorter end of your ribbon.

Step 5

Slide the end of the strands into the straws up to where they are wrapped (including your garland strand). Add hot glue on the tip of the straw where the strands are inserted.

Step 6

Next, rotate your straw and apply more glue. When you have finished, the entire tip of the straw where the ribbon and garland are inserted should be covered with hot glue.

Step 7

Using the blade edge of your scissors, curl your gift ribbon.

Tip:

  • If you don’t know how to do this, place the blade of your scissors at the base of a strand of ribbon. Pull the ribbon taut then drag the blade to the end of the ribbon keeping it taut against the blade the entire time.

How colorful and festive are these little cuties? They are super easy to make and so much fun to play with. Even though it isn’t the fourth yet, I’ve already been twirling them around the house with the kiddos. They are also responsible for the awesome Harry Potter marathon we had last weekend (worth every minute). Make sure that you make enough wands that you can get in on the action. It is such an easy way to connect with your kids. Don’t miss our 4th of July page if you want even more fun patriotic crafts or need some festive food for your celebration!
