Personalize it with your family name and throw it in a comfy chair. You have just created a bright and cheerful reading nook to relax in! It doesn’t get much easier than that.

Paintings/Pictures – Your child’s artwork can totally be utilized as mantel décor. Throw it in a frame and display it proudly. Your kids will love being included in your decorating!

Toys – I collect unique and nerdy toys that absolutely deserved to be displayed. I don’t recommend using your kids’ toys because they will likely try to scale your fireplace to play with them.

Candles – These are another super easy way to add color to your décor. Up your décor personalization with colorful candles that display family photos. The awesome ones in the photos came from Shutterfly and are beautiful. They also smell incredible which makes me one happy momma.

Fabric – You can totally swag some colorful fabric across your mantel and then add your décor pieces on top. This adds additional depth and color to your home instantly.

Bookshelves

Bookshelves aren’t just for books! Even if your shelves are packed to the brim with books, like mine, you can add some pops of color. Add some colorful toys or trinkets in front of your books. For some reason our family has an excess of fun banks. These make fantastic decorative pieces.

Step 1

First, choose your four quotes. I used:

  1. “Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.”
  2. “Inconceivable.”
  3. “You mean you wish to surrender to me? Very well, I accept.”
  4. “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Step 2

Next, sketch out how you want your words to appear on your canvas.

  • Remember to cover the edges of the canvas as well.

Step 4

Allow the paint to dry.

Step 5

Sketch out the designs on the painted canvases with your colored pencil.

Tip:

  • If you need to erase you can but have some black paint on hand to cover any areas that require touch-ups.

Step 6

Go over your pencil lines with white paint. Allow the paint to dry.

Step 7 (Optional)

Paint a second coat of white over the areas that need it. This will be necessary for large areas (like the letters on the “Inconceivable” canvas).

This DIY Princess Bride subway art was so fun to make. Of course, getting to watch the movie while I made it didn’t hurt. I chose to go with black and white as a nod to the Dread Pirate Roberts’ outfit. If you want to match the color scheme you already have in your home, choose colors that do so. I still would recommend only 2 colors per canvas to create the bold look. Before you go, get your Princess Bride fix by checking out the other awesome recipes and tutorials from my friends. You might be inspired to host a movie night soon!

The best part of finding that awesome item is the creativity it sparks within you. Instead of seeing what the item is, you see what it can become. That is exactly what happened when I saw this village wall hanging. The traditional paint design didn’t suit my style but I love the clean lines and knew I could turn it into a unique, modern design for my home. This thrift store village art makeover delivers just that: a modern glam piece of artwork that I love.

Step 4 (Optional)

Depending on the condition of your thrift store village art, you may want to add a third coat as I did. Mine was still quite vibrant so it needed this extra coat.

Tip:

  • You want to still be able to see a faint outline of the details through the paint.
