Watch a Movie
With Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu services, finding a free movie to watch is easier than ever. If you’re movie buffs and want to watch something newer with your mom, check online for free Redbox rental codes. Rent the newest release in mom’s favorite genre and treat her.

Look Through Photo Albums
A wonderful idea that won’t cost you a penny is to spend time with your mom looking through old photo albums. Let her show you pictures from her childhood. She will enjoy sharing her past with you and you may learn something you didn’t know before about your mom.

Get Fit Together
Find a free class in your area for some fun fitness like Zumba or yoga. Throw up your hair and take your mom to try it out. You both may enjoy it so much that you will have found a new activity to do regularly with each other. If you and/or your mom are a little self-conscious about going to a class, find a free video on YouTube. You can still get all the benefits of the activity but in the privacy of your own home.

Cook Together
This is a great bonding activity that can be reminiscent of your childhood. Let you mom teach you how to make something new or a family recipe that has been passed down. Not only will you learn a new recipe but it will spark conversation about memories and tips. Bonus: afterward you will have some delicious food to eat.
Game Night
Game nights are a big deal in my family. One of my mom’s favorite things is when my brother and I bring our families over for a night of board games. This is a fun and totally free way to make Mother’s Day special for your mom. Plus, it is a ton of fun!
Call Her
This is such a simple act that would mean the world to your mom (or grandma, or mother-in-law). All it costs you is time and she will appreciate the gesture immeasurably. Ask her what she has been up to or maybe what plans coming up she is excited about! This is a great way to open conversation lines and let her take the lead.
Pamper Yourselves
This is another excellent activity to do with your mom. Make some foot soaks, DIY face masks, and mimosas. Next spend the day (or a few hours) and pamper yourselves. If you have the tools (and the talent) you can also do manicures and pedicures. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s relaxing and fun!

Enjoy Her Hobbies
Take the opportunity to enjoy her hobbies with her. If your mom is a gardener, help her out in the garden. She will appreciate the time with you and most likely appreciate the help as well. If she loves to knit, have her teach you some basics stitches or show you how to read a pattern. The point is to choose something that she loves and share it with her.

Go for a Hike
Something about being outside together opens up lines of communication between people. Go to a state park or find a walking trail in your city and spend a few hours hiking together. Before you go, make sure you have plenty of water and some snacks, depending on how long your hike will be. Also make sure you take plenty of photos with mom while you’re out!
Karaoke Night
If your mom loves to sing, treat her to a private karaoke night. If you don’t already own a karaoke machine, you likely know someone who has one you could borrow for the night. Set it up, pour some wine, and take turns belting out your favorite songs!

There you have it. You don’t need a lot of money to spoil and surprise your mom! These activities are great for more than just Mother’s Day, too. Pull one out any time you want to make mom feel special. Don’t forget these great DIY gifts you can make for mom on a budget!
