Beautiful and Functional Stash Frame

If you own movies chances are you have some DVD cases lying around.  We store ours in CD binders so we have a lot of empty cases… and then somehow got a whole box more of them from my mom.  You don’t want to throw them out and add to your already overflowing landfills.  Instead, upcycle them into a beautiful and functional stash frame.

This beautiful and functional stash frame is more than meets the eye!

So what is a stash frame and what should you keep in it?  A stash frame is simply a picture frame you hang on your wall that looks like a regular frame.  However, it has ‘hidden’ storage inside for hiding cash, gift cards, or whatever you want to stash!  This one is even better because you can customize it to match your decor helping it blend in even more.  Don’t you love items that are more than they appear?

Step 1

Measure and cut your paper using your frame as a guide.  Make sure that you leave enough extra so that you can wrap it around the edges.

Step 2

Center your frame on your decorative paper and trace the inside.  Next, draw an “x” from corner to corner.

Step 3

Using scissors or an XActo knife, cut along the lines of your “x”.  Do not cut out the edges of the traced rectangle.

Step 4

Realign your frame with the center on the tracing.

Step 5

Mod Podge around the edges and begin folding up like you’re wrapping a present.  Start with the edges and then fold and adhere the inside flaps.

Tip:

  • You may have to fold the flaps in half before adhering to your frame to keep them from hanging over the outside edge.

Step 6

Once you have finished adhering your paper to the frame, put on a top coat of Mod Podge to seal it.  Do this on the front and back of your frame allowing one side to dry completely before moving on to the other.

Step 7

Once your frame is completely dry it is time to glue it to your DVD case.  Place you glue on the center of bottom and side surfaces of the frame.  This will ensure your photo aligns correctly when you slip it in from the top.

Note:

  • Do not glue the top side of your frame.  This will prevent you from being able to slide your photo in.

Step 8

Press frame firmly to your DVD case.  Be sure that the side of the case that opens is at the top.

Step 9

My DVD case already had openings under the plastic that were perfect for hanging.  I simply cut a slit in the plastic to accommodate.

If yours does not, don’t worry.  You can attach some frame hardware to the back with glue and hang it that way.

Now you have a beautiful, functioning picture frame to hang on your wall that doubles as a place to stash things (like a Sephora gift card… just saying).  Bonus: you’re taking clutter and turning it into storage!  These are so easy to make, you will want everyone in the family to have one.

DIY Jack-O-Lantern Treat Jar

I am crazy excited for fall.  I love the leaves and sweatshirts along with all of the special, seasonal treats!  One of my favorite fall treats are what we call happy pumpkins.  That’s not their real name, but they are those Little Debbie treats that look like cute little jack-o-lanterns and taste like an autumn party in your mouth. (No, this is not a sponsored post I just really LOVE happy pumpkins.)

We just recently picked up our first box of the season and they needed an exciting container to be stored in.  What better way to store happy pumpkins than in a jack-o-lantern treat jar?

Materials

Step 1

Rip or cut scrapbook paper in half.  Then take one half and rip in half again.

Step 2

Remove lid from container and cover the can with Mod Podge.  Cover with pieces of scrapbook paper, alternating patterns.

Tip:

If the paper is a heavier weight and is not conforming to the container, use a paintbrush to wet it with water until it does.

Step 3

Cover entire container with second coat of Mod Podge.

Note: The container wasn’t coming out as orange as I wanted so I added a layer of tissue paper to help.  This will entirely depend on the scrapbook paper you use and the desired look you want to achieve.

Step 4

Add strips of black tissue paper to create the sections of the pumpkin.  Then add 2 eyes and a mouth.

Note:  I free-handed mine out of the black tissue paper.  If you need a template, a Google search will bring up tons you can use.

Step 5

While your jack-o-lantern is drying, cut your foam block in half.  Then carve one half to resemble a stem and seal with Mod Podge (this makes it easier to paint and keeps the foam from falling off).

Tip:

Don’t try to carve a perfect circle.  Stems are not even and will be more realistic if it is roughly carved.

Step 6

While stem is drying, paint the bottom of container black.  Once paint is dry, cover with a coat of Mod Podge to seal it.

Step 7

Paint a coat of dark brown on the entire stem.  Before it dries, add some detail to it with the white.

Tip:

If it dries too quickly and the white shows up too prominently, go over it again with the dark brown lightly.

Step 8

Remove 2 leaves from an old faux floral stem.  (The ones I used were one piece.)

Attach leaves to the bottom of your stem with hot glue and then attach the entire piece (stem and leaves) to the lid of the coffee container.

DIY Decorative Napkin Basket

When spring and summer roll around the state of your outdoor decor gets a harsh light thrown on it. The ravages of winter made it easy to forget your ever-growing to-do list for you deck, garden, and yard. I recently scored these awesome shallow, square baskets at a thrift store 4 of them for $1 and I immediately knew what I wanted to do with them.  We entertain a lot in the summer and I wanted a cute little basket that could go on the outdoor table to hold napkins.  Add these baskets to my amazing Hazel & Ruby stencil clearance find and I was ready to make this DIY decorative napkin basket!

DIY Decorative Napkin Basket Materials

Step 1

Spray your basket with the surface sealer and allow it to dry completely.

Step 2

Cover the entire inside bottom liberally with your acrylic paint.  Let it dry (usually at least 1 hour).

Step 3

Place your stencil over where you have painted and spray with the metallic spray paint.  Allow it to dry completely and add a second coat if needed.  Do this for both sides so that the entire basket is painted, being sure to allow each coat to dry completely before applying more.

Step 4

Spray your sealant, being sure to complete cover the basket (both sides).  Also allow this to dry completely.

This is so super easy to make. Once you’re done you want to have fun summer BBQ just to show it off! Find even more summer ideas here.
