Easy DIY Curtains

If you work from home or do a lot of DIY projects, you know how important an office can be.  If you don’t have one (been there, done that) then the importance is highlighted even more.  I have recently been working on creating a joint office and crafting space and I’m finally getting around to the fun stuff like decorating.  The most recent project?  These super easy DIY curtains.

Step 1

Measure your window to determine how much fabric you need.

Tips:

  • Hang your curtain rod first.  You want it to be placed above the window at least a few inches and you want it to extend past the window on either side.  When you measure, do so from the curtain rod.  Also remember that you will want them to hang past your window as well.
  • When measuring the width, don’t just divide the total in half and add in an inch or two for hems.  You want some overlap once they are hung.  Add at least 4-6 extra inches to each panel to facilitate this.
  • When measuring length remember to add enough extra length to not only create hems but also the channel for the rod to go through.

Step 2

Measure and cut out your fabric based on the above measurements.

Tips:

  • The old adage holds true for this to ‘measure twice, cut once.’
  • To achieve a semi-blackout curtain without the extra work, use a heavyweight outdoor fabric.  They come in a myriad of styles and patterns to fit your décor.

Step 3

Create hems on the long edges of your panels and secure with pins.

Step 4

Sew each pinned hem.  Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the top and bottom of the panels.

Step 5

Create the channel for your curtain rod to slide through by essentially creating a second, extra-large hem at the top of each panel.  When you set it, be sure there is at least a 3-inch gap, bigger if your curtain rod is especially large.

DIY Stamped Patriotic Napkins

Summer is a time for celebrations, sun, and (hopefully) more time for crafting. These celebrations don’t have mean excess waste for you though. Cloth napkins are an excellent way to save money, save the planet, and prevent mounds of trash for you after a gathering. That doesn’t mean you can’t have something cute and festive to use, though. Even better, they also don’t have to cost you a fortune. These simple stamped patriotic cloth napkins are perfect for summer BBQ’s and celebrations.

Step 1

Cut your towels into fourths.  If you would like you can hem the edges, but I like the look of the rough edges so I chose not to. (Don’t worry; they still hold up great even if you don’t hem them.)

Update:

  • We have been using these for a year now and they are still holding up great despite many washing and 3 rambunctious kids using them!

Step 2

Dip your stamps in the fabric paint and stamp onto towel.

Tips:

  • It is easier to control your paint if you use a paintbrush to apply it to the stamps, especially the flag. This will let you place the separate colors where you choose. If you’re not worried about it, you can simply dip your stamp.
  • If you notice, I chose to do one flag and a bunch of stars. Feel free to change it up and do whatever pattern you want.  You will notice a difference in the ones I stamped and the ones the kiddos did.

Step 3

Allow your paint to dry completely.

Tip:

  • If you let your children help with this project, the napkins that they stamp will take probably take longer to dry. Kids tend to stamp the paint on thicker.

Step 4

Once your napkins are completely dry, run them through the dryer on medium or high heat for a full cycle. This will help set the paint.

Step 5

One you have set the paint, you can wash and dry them as usual. Next, just use at your next gathering and enjoy!

The stamps you choose to use can vary the look of these greatly. I like the messy look of the Tim Holtz stamp because it reminds me of all our flag has been through. If you want a cleaner look, choose a flag stamp with large, clear lines. These patriotic napkins are so simple to make that you can get the kiddos involved in making them. Kids will love using a napkin that they helped create and they will be happy to show them off at your summer parties. Want more fun patriotic crafts?
