Are you sick of your family coming in the door and dumping their stuff wherever is convenient? Maybe you have tried multiple organization ideas that have failed or, worse, ones that work that are hideous to look at.

Meanwhile, you have a perfectly good coat closet that is so cluttered and disorganized that it isn’t convenient for use.

Tools to Organize Your Coat Closet

Empty wooden shelves

Step 1

First, take everything out of your closet, throwing away trash or broken items as you find them.

Step 2

Next, go through everything and sort it into 3 sections:

  • Donation Items (put those into your cardboard box)
  • Items to Go Back in the Closet
  • Items that Need to Go Somewhere Else in the Home

Step 3

Immediately put away the items that need to find new homes within your house.

Step 4

Then take your donate box out to your car to drop off the next time you’re running errands.

Step 5

Now, give your coat closet a thorough clean.

Step 6

Next, add your organization systems to your coat closet.

Step 7

Lastly, add the items going back in the closet to your organization systems.

Organization Items Ideas

In order from left to right:

  1. A shoe rack is always a good idea. We recently instated a rule that shoes come off immediately when you get in the house after one of the kiddos tracked dog yuck all through the house. Gross!
  2. We use this mini-closet in the laundry room for my husband’s military gear but this is an excellent way to organize your coat closet. It gives you plenty shelves for cold weather accessories but and provides a lower bar for younger kids to hang their coats easily.
  3. Storage boxes give all of those accessories an easy and manageable home.

In order from left to right:

  1. Don’t overlook the versatility of hanging shoe organizers! I seriously use them for wrangling all kinds of items. Organize wallets, keys, headphones, and more with this baby.
  2. Large baskets like the one above are perfect for organizing blankets or outdoor toys (like sidewalk chalk and bubbles) on the top shelf of your coat closet.
  3. If your closet isn’t big enough for the mini-closet above, you can use hanging organizers as an alternative for organizing winter gear and umbrellas.

That’s really all you need to organize your hall closet. You probably already have some of these items in your home going unused. Now you can put them to work for your family instead of having them take up space.

I seriously can’t count the number of times I’ve had to get on the kids for dumping their backpacks or my husband for dropping his military stuff as soon as they walk in the door. No more.

Now you can finally stop the clutter from be dumped on your living room armchair!

Organize your coat closet so that everything has a place once and for all. In addition to your family always being able to find the items they need, it will be easier for you to keep the living room clean and organized.

DIY Credit Card Keychains for Debt Free Living

You may be wondering how DIY credit card keychains can help you with debt free living. When you’re ready to get serious and truly eliminate your debt for good, you cut up your credit card. Why? It is because if you have a debt problem you are using credit cards as a crutch.

Any time that something happens that you can’t pay cash for, you whip out a credit card. You aren’t paying them off every month and your debt is growing. It is time to get rid of the crutch and cut your credit cards into tiny little pieces.

Then turn them into these DIY credit card keychains so that you are reminded of your debt free goal every time you pull out your keys.

Cutting up your credit cards is hard. Trust me. We have $40,000 in debt (not counting our house). Of that, $36,000 is student loan debt. I have been out of school for almost 10 years and we are still paying on student loans. That is crazy to me!

On top of that, anytime we needed to fix a car or new clothes for the kids, we put it on a credit card. Something had to give and it was time to make a change.

Step 1 was ditching those credit cards. Now our safety net has to be cash and that’s terrifying. You have to make the choice, though, that you don’t ever want to be here again. These DIY credit card keychains are the perfect reminder of that emotion and that goal.

After your base has dried, if you are using a bracelet charm like me, use pliers to snap off the bottom ring.

Step 8 (Optional)

Then file the area down so that there are no sharp edges.
