Easy and Colorful DIY Luau Invitations

This year I am helping to organize our class reunion.  Anyone who has done this can attest to the amount of work it takes (not to mention time, money, and energy).  One of the easiest parts for us was coming up with a theme.  Since we scheduled it for late summer we knew we wanted a more casual and fun theme so we decided on a luau BBQ. While we had done electronic invitations already, some of our classmates expressed that they would like to receive paper invitations to have as keepsakes.  I love this kind of stuff so I offered to design and make them.  Thankfully, a couple of the other girls helped me to assemble them since we needed so many! These DIY luau invitations are so easy to make and festive that they will be perfect for your summer party!

**I have not included amounts in these because it will be dependent on the amount you need to make.  I can tell you that we needed 100 and I used roughly 7-8 leis, an entire pack of cardstock, and about 5 tape runners.

Step 1

Design and print out the information part of your invitations on regular printer paper, 2 to a page.

Step 2

Cut your cardstock in half, bisecting on the 11” side.  Also cut out your information sections.

Step 3 (optional)

I chose to round the corners of both the information pieces and the cardstock pieces.  If you choose to do the same, you should do so before taping the pieces together.

Step 4

Tape the two pieces together for each invitation, centering the information on the cardstock.

Step 5

Prepare your flowers by cutting apart your leis (I got 3pks at the dollar store).  Then slide the flowers off of the string.

Tip:

Note: These leis have come in so handy! I’ve used them on a ton of projects like this adorable girl’s purse!

Step 6

Assemble your flowers by placing two flowers of different colors together and securing them with a brad.

Tip:

Step 7

For each invitation, adhere a flower on the bottom left of your information with a mounting square.

Step 8

Lastly, cut out green palm trees using your Cricut then attach 1 palm tree on the right of each invitation with the tape runner.

That’s it!  I am so happy with how these turned out and again, they are just so simple to make. We were able to assemble around 60 of these in a couple of hours. DIY Kids Summer Memory Books

These moments right now are the moments that you will look back on and wish you could have held on to. Long after the tantrums have subsided and kisses no longer heal boo-boos you will remember. You will long for the little humans your children used to be while simultaneously being proud of the adults they are becoming. That is why I believe in creating and preserving memories (probably a little too much if you ask my family). This summer, I’m trying something totally new with my kids. We’re going to work together to make summer memory books! I want a way to preserve a little piece of who they are, right now in these moments. Remember the activities, events, and crafts they get excited about. These aren’t just for parents to hold on to the memories. This is also for kids to have something they can look back on later in life and smile at who they used to be.

Step 1

Let the kids decorate the cover of their memory books however they want. Younger children may need more hands-on help from you.

Step 2

Have each child write his or her name and the current year on the back of the front cover.  (You can do this for them if they are unable to write yet.)

Step 3

Throughout the summer tape keepsakes and pictures into the book.  You can also have the child journal periodically about their days and activities. This is the part to let his or her creativity shine!

It is that simple to create this summer memory book with your kids. It is also one of the closest ways you can get to hold on to these fleeting moments. This is an awesome activity for summer fun and an incredible keepsake that they can look back on for years to come. My kids are already crazy excited and all we have done thus far is decorate the covers! Keep all the fun coming on our Summer page!

Birthday Card Frame Insert

I love making things that are a little bit more personal, so when I made the DIY Birthday Card Frame I knew I wanted it to include something that would resemble an actual card but also include my son’s handwritten crayon signature. Unfortunately, he wasn’t around while I had the time to make the card.  My solution?  I found one of the many pieces of artwork and notes that he has signed and simply cut out his signature.  Done and done.  So there is a little bonus tip for you.  Okay, on to the tutorial to make the birthday card frame insert.

Birthday Card Frame Insert Materials

 

Step 1

Using the little paper insert that comes in frames as a guide, cut cardstock to the correct size for the frame.

 

Step 2

Stamp your message or picture (or both) on the piece of cardstock.

Note:

 

Step 3

Pour your holographic embossing powder over the stamped image and then shake the excess onto a scrap piece of paper.  Return the excess to the container.

 

Step 4

Use your heat gun to go over your stamped image until the embossing powder is heated. (You will notice a change in its appearance once it melts) Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have embossed all of the images you wanted stamped on your card.

 

Step 5

Have your child sign the card, place it in the frame and you’re done!

Don’t forget the tip at the beginning of the post to help you if your child isn’t with you when you make the card. You can easily personalize the insert to fit the birthday girl or boy’s style. This tutorial is also easy enough to let your child help you make it. Mom should do the heat gun steps, though. You can get more kid made crafts on our Kid’s Page!
