8 Reasons This is the Best Family Investment

There are a lot of things I look forward to during the summer.  Number one is definitely more time with my family.  During the school year, everyone is so busy and we are very constricted by schedules, holidays, and pretty much just life.  The summer offers us more freedom to explore, play, and get messy.  I love it. One of our absolute favorite summer activities is going to the zoo. If you think the zoo is just about seeing animals, you need to check it out again. We go at least a couple of times a week. I’m not an animal lover by any means, but there is just something about visiting the majestic creatures there.  It is incredible and entertaining. However, there are so many other amazing activities, photo ops, and general fun to be had at the zoo outside of the animals!   The best part is that most zoo passes aren’t very expensive. That is why a zoo pass is the best summer family investment.

1. Free Shows and Concerts

Zoos often have free shows and concerts throughout the year. The Cincinnati Zoo has Tunes and Blooms every week in April which is weekly, after hours free concert. We’ve also been to other shows during the year that were 100% free and family friendly. A few years ago we attended a fun Avenger’s show that our oldest son absolutely loved!

2. There are Tons of Photo Ops

There are countless places for amazing photo opportunities. Some of them the kids love so much that you can look back at all of the photos later and watch them grow up. It is incredibly special and a wonderful keepsake to create. Last year, we even received a FREE professional (and printed) family photo for member’s appreciation night!

3. Member’s Appreciation

Most zoos offer some sort of member appreciation. At the Cincinnati Zoo they have a specific night dedicated to it. There are tons of perks including the photo mentioned above. You also receive amazing discounts on face painting, food, and more. Plus some fun freebies and activities are included on top of the regular zoo activities.

4. Rides and Playgrounds

There are also rides and play areas in the zoo. Kids will always enjoy the train, the merry-go-round, and the playground. Some zoos, like ours, even offer 3D theaters!

5. Learning Opportunities

As you would imagine, the zoo is packed with learning opportunities. There are interactive animal centers and fun facts plastered everywhere. You can learn about more than just animals at the zoo, too. For example, our zoo had a real food garden for a few years that was a lot of fun for the kids.

6. Animal Encounters

From special animal encounters set up throughout the zoo where kids can actually get up close and pet the animals to the regularly scheduled ones, there are lots of ways to engage with the animals. We have pet snakes, alligators, penguins, and more. We have fed and brushed goats. These are wonderful experiences that your kids will cherish as they grow.

7. Special Events

Zoos also hold special events around holidays. At Easter, kids can stop by stations placed throughout the zoo and receive treats as well as get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. In October there is trick-or-treat every weekend. Also, the zoo is open year-round. In the winter, our zoo has the Festival of Lights which is fun and gorgeous. We have met Mr. and Mrs. Gingerbread and sipped on free cocoa while enjoying the beautiful lights all over.

8. Save on Food

Another important thing to point out is that you save even more by choosing the zoo because you can bring in your own food. We always pack lunch, snacks, and drinks so we are set for the whole trip. Another little tip for you is to bring some sort of small treat, like a sucker, because if you walk by some ice cream or cotton candy but aren’t going to buy any, you can pull out the surprise treat. Your kids will love it!

Again, all of this is included with a zoo pass which is good for 12 months from the date you get it.  We pay a little less than $200 for our season pass which gets in 2 named adults, plus 2 adult guests, and up to 8 children each visit.  It also covers our parking which can run around $9 a visit.  Compared with theme parks, aquariums, and museums this is an incredible deal. A couple hundred dollars for a year’s worth of fun, activities, and family memories? Absolutely worth it. Looking for other summer ideas?  Check out our summer page!

In case you’re wondering, I have not been compensated in any way for this post.  My family just truly enjoys visiting the zoo as much as possible.  We go all year long and the benefits have been innumerable. I want to help you make the most of your money and time which I feel a zoo pass absolutely does.

How to Introduce Kids to Basic Woodworking Tools

This is a guest post written by Michael Barton.  Check out his helpful tool reviews on Power Tools Planet.

Woodworking lessons can be taught at home as merely a hobby, as a requirement for homeschoolers, or they may help your children with their craft classes or in school. Either way, woodworking is a great opportunity for both children and parents to learn something new and bond more; it is also a great way to see if your child is naturally inclined towards art or mathematics.

Children as young as 5, depending on their level of patience and ability to understand simple instructions, can take part actively in these lessons, and learn to make toys, wooden games, doll cradles, build a birdhouse and a bird feeder, shelves, stools, etc.

Introducing kids to basic woodworking tools is a fun and educational way to spend quality time with your kids!

Why Woodworking

Woodworking helps children explore and enhance their creativity and imagination, and improve their spatial, visual and motor skills, as well as their self-esteem. They will also learn to count, measure, think critically and solve problems, because to make an object from scratch, kids will learn to plan every step of the construction.

Getting Started

First of all, don’t push your kids, but rather try to spark their interest in woodworking. Start with simple projects to help children build confidence with each one, and remember, projects should be fun and the instructions easy for the child to understand.

Since they are kids, they most likely have no experience in woodworking, so you must teach them the basics, starting with safety measures, and the materials and tools you will use before you actually get to building anything.

Then, ensure a clean and safe working space for the kids by putting away all sharp and power tools, and keeping close by a first-aid kit. Make sure the little ones wear appropriate clothing (that is not loose) and footwear, as well as safety glasses that fit them. And supervise the kids at all times.

Materials and Tools

Start with soft materials like Styrofoam so that kids can cut them easily; pine, cedar and other softwoods can also be worked on by children, usually once they get the hang of things. A good alternative is precut kits made from pine that only need to be assembled, sanded and applied some finish.

You will need a ruler, measuring tape with fractions, various grit sandpaper, paint, glue, and hand tools; limit the use of power tools especially when there are young children involved in the project. Ideally, the hand tools should be smaller so that kids are able to grasp them well: use a screwdriver, a 7—16 oz hammer, nails, screws, a block plane, a handsaw.

Teach kids how to read a tape measure, saw, and finish each project, and use cork boards to show them how to hammer in nails without bending them or hurting their fingers.

Even if you as the parent are not very skilled at woodworking, the important thing is to have fun, spend quality time with your kids, and make sure you have taken all safety precautions – this way, you get to build memories that will be with your children for a lifetime.

Kid Decorated Aprons

Kids love to do art projects and help in the kitchen.  Unfortunately, they can be messy little monsters while they’re at it.  Help encourage their creativity and protect their outfits in future projects with these super-simple kid decorated aprons.  My kids had such a blast making these that they also made some for all of their friends.  With it being so close to the holidays they decided to wrap these up and give them as gifts but this makes a great activity for birthday parties and other kid-friendly events as well.

Materials

Step 1

Since you haven’t made the aprons to protect them, make sure your kids wear clothes that can get paint on them because they will get paint on them.

Step 2

Place some fabric paint on the paint pallets.  Give the kids some brushes and water and let them go to town on some aprons.

Tip:

  • Once they finished be sure to label which apron is meant for whom so that there aren’t any arguments later.

Step 3

Allow to dry 24 hours.

Step 4

Run the aprons through the dryer on a high setting for 30-40 minutes.  This will help set the paint on the aprons.  Once you have run them through the dryer for the initial cycle the aprons can be used, washed, and dried like normal.

This project couldn’t be any easier and now you won’t have to worry about all of those holiday cookies you plan on making this year.  Let the kids put on their new personalized aprons and help you out.  Or, if you’re really brave, give them some paper and paint and let them go nuts while you get some projects of your own done.  Either way they will enjoy both making the aprons and using them for all of the fun projects you do.  You will love all of the memories you make together.
