Crafty 3D Fireworks Decoration | Kids Korner by Jude

Welcome to the first ever Kids Korner by Jude creation. Clearly, he is super excited for the 4th of July because this week he made this crafty 3D fireworks decoration. Luckily, it is easy to make using items you likely have on hand.

Note From Mom

Let me tell you, it is incredibly hard letting your kid take the reins on a project. It’s crazy hard. You want to see them succeed and protect them from failure.

Then I realized, who am I to know what will succeed and what won’t? Furthermore, how can he learn if I never let him make mistakes?

Instead, I guided him when he asked. Gave my opinion when solicited and let him create from the heart and imagination.

**I have edited his instructions for grammar and clarification but all ideas and steps are his.

Metal card tin with popsicle sticks and pipe cleaners inside

You Need:

  • Multi-colored Popsicle Sticks
  • Assortment of Pipe Cleaners
  • Small Metal Box (His came from a card game)
  • Blue Spray Paint
  • Hot Glue
  • Sparkly Pompom

Pipe cleaner wrapped popsicle stick

Step 1

First, wrap a pipe cleaner around the top of a popsicle stick.

Step 2

Then, do this to at least 4 more popsicle sticks.

Mom’s Note:

  • I think 6 or 7 popsicle sticks would be best for creating that “firework” appearance.

Step 3

Then take the lid off of your box. [You do not need it for this craft.]

Step 4

Place the box [open side down] on a piece of cardboard [or other safe surface].

Blue Spray Painted Box

Step 5

Paint the box with spay paint.

Painting Red acrylic paint on metal box

Mom’s Notes:

  • As you can see, I let him try out his acrylic paint idea first. Of course, it take a lot of coats of acrylic paint to cover metal, especially if you don’t prime it first. Afterwards, we came up with spray paint as the solution.
  • Kids can totally do this step but make sure that they have proper protection on such as safety goggles and a mask.

Step 6

Let the painted box dry.

Dot of hot glue on metal box

One popsicle stick glued to blue metal box

Step 7

Then put the sticks on the bottom of the box with hot glue.

Mom’s Note:

  • Mom’s need to help with this step. I’m a grown woman and still manage to burn myself with hot glue at least weekly. For this step, I would put a dab of hot glue on the box, let it cool a few seconds, then Jude placed the popsicle stick on it.

pompom glued on metal box

Step 8

After the popsicle sticks are glued on, glue a sparkly pompom to the middle.

Mom’s Note:

  • Again, I put the glue on and he pressed the pompom into it a few seconds later.

I made this because it is fun to make and you can use [it] as a decoration. The most important part is to have fun.

In the end this little craft turned out adorable. More importantly, he is proud of his crafty 3D fireworks decoration. It is easy for young kids to make, too, which is always great when your kids range from 4 to 9.

If you are like me, and want to protect your kid from the world, take a breath. Let him make mistakes now while he is under the umbrella of your protection. Our mistakes make us better and it is no different for kids. All we can do is make sure they have a safe place to land.

Everyone knows I’m a sucker for desserts. Not only have I always had a sweet tooth but desserts are so much easier to make pretty.

I mean, if my lobster came out looking like a unicorn I likely wouldn’t be able to eat it. Yuck! On the other hand, if you give me a cookie that looks like a unicorn, I’m all about it.

That’s why you will always find new holiday treat recipes like these red white and blue swirl cake mix cookies on DIY Adulation. Colorful, pretty, and festive desserts are a fabulous creative outlet that you get to share with friends and family.

Plate of red, white, and blue cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 Boxes White Cake Mix
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1 Cup of Milk
  • Red and Blue Food Coloring

Step 1

First, preheat your oven to 375° F.

Step 2

Next empty both boxes of cake mix into a large mixing bowl.

Step 3

Add your eggs and milk and stir until thoroughly mixed.

Note:

  • The batter should be thick but not stiff like sugar cookie dough.

Step 4

Next, separate your batter into thirds in 3 mixing bowls.

Step 5

Once your batter is separated, add blue food coloring to one bowl of batter and red to a second bowl of batter.

Tip:

  • The amount of food coloring will vary depending on which kind you use. Gel coloring will not require as much for vibrant colors. The liquid kind that comes in a 4 pack will require a significant amount.

Step 6

Stir the food coloring into the batter thoroughly. Be sure to either rinse off your spoon/spatula between colors or use a separate one for each color. You don’t want to end up with purple in one of your bowls.

Red, white, and blue cookie batter in piping bag

Step 7

After your red and blue batter is mixed, add dollops of each of the 3 batters into a piping bag alternately.

Tip:

  • Try not to over-fill your piping bag. Only add what will fit on a cookie sheet at a time otherwise your colors will start to mix as they sit.

Step 8

Next, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cut the end off of your filled piping bag and pipe on your cookies in a swirl motion.

Step 9

Bake in the over at 375° F for 8 minutes.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and cool on the rack for 2 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.

Makes Roughly 84 Cookies

Aren’t these red white and blue swirl cake mix cookies fantastic? They are seriously the softest cookies you will ever taste.

If you want to make them in advance of your party you can store them in the fridge for up to a weeks and they will still be soft.

Any longer than that and I recommend freezing them. Remember to pull them out 12-24 hours in advance to ensure they defrost in time for your celebration!

Surprisingly, this is my first time making slime. I have no idea how I have a 9, 5, and soon-to-be 4 year old without having made slime yet. They simply haven’t asked to make it.

I have a feeling that is all going to change now. Still, you see all of these fun and colorful slime recipes on Pinterest. At some point, you just have to give them a try.

Moms and kids alike will love squishing this easy patriotic metallic stars slime through their fingers! Click To Tweet

The Inspiration Pin

Technically this is one of many inspiration pins. There are so many fun slime recipes and it feels like I have pinned them all. Also, I was going to try a traditional slime recipe but found this awesome Elmer’s slime mix and decided to give it a try.

Bottle of glue, bag of metallic stars confetti, and bottle of Elmer's slime solution

Glittery Patriotic Slime Ingredients

  • Clear Non-toxic Liquid Glue (Here is a great deal on Elmer’s Brand)
  • Elmer’s Slime Solution
  • 1 tbsp. Cornstarch
  • Star Confetti

Emptying container of glue into a glass mixing bowl

Step 1

First, pour your entire bottle of glue into a glass mixing bowl.

Step 2

Next, add 1/4 cup of Elmer’s Slime Solution and stir together.

Tip:

  • You don’t need to dirty a measuring cup to complete this step. The bottle comes with a handy guide on the side. Pour in small amounts at a time until you reach the first line.

Step 3

Add 1 tbsp. of cornstarch to your slime and mix it into your slime by kneading it.

Note:

  • The recipe doesn’t call for this on the slime solution bottle. We found that the slime was too sticky without it.
  • You can see that our stars are already added in the photo (because after about 10 minutes of kneading it was still super sticky) but I recommend adding it now.

Step 4

Now sprinkle 1/3 to 1/2 of your stars confetti onto your slime.

Step 5

Then knead in your stars until they are spread throughout your slime.

Step 6
