Family Dinner: Chore or Connecting?

Lately, dinners together seem more like a chore than a family bonding experience. No matter what I make at least one kid has a problem with it (even if they’ve eaten it before in the past). We have the rule that you don’t leave the table until everyone has finished eating. However, when you’re dealing with an obstinate child dinner lasts until bedtime.

What’s worse is knowing that they get their stubbornness from me. While I loved healthy healthy food (unlike my kiddos) I wouldn’t touch anything that had any condiments, pepper, or weird sauces on it. In fact, I’d rather sit at the table until bedtime than even touch something I didn’t think I would like. Well, hello payback.

While I’ve adjusted the ‘no getting up until everyone is finished’ rule slightly, I feel like an hour at the table isn’t too much to ask. These conversation cards are the perfect way to get the conversation going and keep the older kiddos from getting bored at the table after they have finished eating.

Sometimes kids are taciturn and don’t want to talk much at the table. You ask them how their days were and you get, “Good” or “Fine”. On the flip side of that, sometimes the little ones think it’s hilarious to call each other “poopy heads”.

Take back the conversation while keeping it fun and learning more about each other with these free printable Thanksgiving family dinner conversation cards.

Preparing Your Conversation Cards

These are so easy to prepare that you can totally have them ready for tonight’s dinner. Simply print out your conversation cards, cut them apart, and voila! I do recommend printing them on a heavier card stock instead of regular weight printer paper.

You can also laminate them for durability. Anytime you combine little hands and food, messes are bound to happen. Laminating them will help them last longer and can even be gently wiped off if needed.

Kids can feel left out during the craziness of Thanksgiving, especially if you’re hosting. Add to that the days they get off from school while you’re preparing and it’s even worse.

I have 2 kiddos in school right now and one still at home which means that school breaks totally jack up our routine. That’s why I make a point to enjoy fun crafts like these with the kiddos during this time of year.

This lets us connect and create together when they have my undivided attention. This makes it easier for them when I’m busy cooking in the kitchen or out Black Friday shopping during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Caramel apples are amazing. In fact, I always get one when we take the kids to the fair each year. Unfortunately, they’re pretty messy to eat so I usually wait to eat mine until I get home. Then I cut it into easier to eat slices with the cores removed.

When Twin Dragon reached out to have me create a new recipe using their awesome wrappers, I was immediately struck with the idea to create this decadent dessert. Everything is better when it’s easy to make and serve, plus now I can get all of that delicious flavor without the frustration.

These wrappers are so easy to use. You literally open up the package and pull a wrapper off of the stack. Easy-peasy. Even better, Twin Dragon offers a ton of options from egg roll wrappers to whole wheat won ton wrappers. You can purchase JSL Foods Twin Dragon products at your local Fred Meyer, Safeway, or Albertsons and have these delicious baked cinnamon caramel apple egg rolls by dinnertime.
