Last week I shared 5 weird items that I haven’t been cleaning like I should. The real question, though, it why. Why aren’t I cleaning these items like I should be? It’s because they aren’t in a convenient list to keep me on track. There are too many things fighting for priority in my mind to keep track of it all mentally.

Put the responsibility on your cleaning checklist and not on your brain. It’s easy to do and will help you tame the stress while staying on top of your home.

You can grab a free printable cleaning checklist in the VIP library or you can make you own handwritten version. Either way you can dominate your domestic responsibilities.

Write It Down

As I said above, there are so many aspects of life you are expected to keep track of that you can’t do it all without help. That help doesn’t have to be people or hired services. Instead, write it down.

Take note of everything you need to clean and how often to clean it. I recommend leaving some blank spaces on your list too, because you will inevitably think of more later. You don’t want to have to create a brand new list to incorporate them.

Make It Reusable

I’m all about saving money and that means making everything I can reusable. A cleaning checklist is no exception. Luckily, there are plenty of easy ways to do this.

Keep it Convenient

Systems don’t work unless they are convenient. Be sure to put your cleaning checklist somewhere you will see it daily. This can be on your vanity, on the back of a cabinet door, or on the wall in your kitchen. Whichever you choose, make sure it is obvious and convenient for you.

Give Yourself Grace

There are going to be days when you simply cannot bring yourself to clean. That’s okay. Your goal should be improvement, not perfection. On the flip side of that, don’t go a week without cleaning because you don’t feel like it. That is not taking a break, it’s laziness. (Don’t worry, I’m guilty of it too.)

Group Cleaning Supplies

Nothing kills your motivation faster than not being able to locate your supplies. Find a way to group cleaning supplies together so you always know where they are.

Do this in a way that makes sense to you. I like my cleaning supplies organized by room. These upcycled room cleaning buckets are what I use. Maybe your organization style is by supplies type. That’s fine too. The point is to make your cleaning supplies easy to find.

There are so many things vying for brain space, don’t let cleaning tasks be one of them. That is why you need a cleaning checklist. It takes the onus off of your brain and puts it onto the paper.

Now all you have to remember is to look at your cleaning checklist once a day. Isn’t that so much easier than trying to store every chore in your head? Heck yeah it is!

Being a stay-at-home mom (SAHM) is no joke. It is emotionally, physically, and mentally exhausting. This is especially true because you are always on the clock. Scenario: I’m making dinner and suddenly the baby starts screaming in the pack-n-play.

I run in to see what’s wrong and find my 2-year-old hitting him over the head with her stuffed Olaf. I put her in time-out for the behavior and sooth the baby.

As I’m making my way back to the stove, the 6-year-old is yelling up the steps to ask if his video game time is up.

After saying “No,” (for the millionth time) I rush back to the kitchen to find the pot of dinner overflowing on the burner.

I have to clean it up before the milky mixture ruins the glass stove top. A few minutes later, I remember I had put the toddler in time-out… How do you keep from melting down?

In the beginning I didn’t. Many nights were spent in tears from the overwhelming stress of it all.

Too many plates were wobbling and I felt like I couldn’t keep up. Then I came up with an easy trick to help balance it all a little more easily.

A kitchen timer saved my sanity and it will save yours too.

Some days mom life is just crazy-making. This $3 DIY and parenting tips are an easy way to save your sanity during those crazy mom days!

How to Use Timers to Save Your Sanity

Step 1

First, buy each child a kitchen timer. We use these timers but there are a ton of options.

Step 2 (Optional)

New systems are easier to implement with kids when they are involved in the process. Get the kids involved and on board with the timers by letting them decorate with stickers, nail polish, or paint.

Tip:

Step 3

Once they are decorated, it is time to put them to work! Here are 7 tips to use these timers and save your sanity.

Video Game Timer

Stop the constant badgering. In our house, our children are limited to 1 hour of video game play a day. Set the timer for one hour and when it goes off, they are done.

Time-Out Tracker

Set the timer for the allotted punishment and when it goes off, your child can get up and play again.

Clean-up Game

I love this game! It is great for children and adults alike! Set your timer for 5 or 10 minutes and race around to clean up.

This works best if you give each person a room and make it a competition to see who can get the most cleaned up in their 5 minute limit.

Bath Timer

If your kids love bath time like mine do, this is excellent. Set the timer for whatever predetermined limit you have allocated for their bath.

When the timer goes off, they will know it is time to get out of the tub. (They may still need some coaxing the first few times, but it will become easier if you are persistent.)

Mommy Time-out

Let’s face it, sometimes as parents we need a break to replenish ourselves, calm our tempers, or just some quiet.

Set the timer (I typically do 10-20 minutes) and let the children know that they cannot ask you anything or request anything of you until the timer goes off.

Again, it will take a few times before it becomes an accepted routine but it is totally worth the payoff.

Ready to Leave Game

With three small children, it is next to impossible to get out of the house on time.

Use this game to have the kids ready to go (closer) to on time. Give them 5 minutes on their timers.

In this time, the kids are to rush and get their shoes, coats, and anything else needed together (or on, depending on their age).

Once they have finished, they sit on the couch with their timers. This gets them all in one place and ready prior to needing to walk out the door.

Patience Training

I think we all could stand to learn a little more patience. Set the timers for 5-10 minutes and the children must sit quietly and patiently until they go off.

If the kids get too wound up and need to simmer down play the patience game.

Warning, though, don’t associate this as a punishment or they will associate patience with misbehaving.

This is one of the best purchases we have ever made. These timers will save mom’s sanity by helping you balance all of your rolls more easily.

In fact, this one simple trick works so well that I have extended it to other areas of my life especially with chores I don’t want to do.

When you know there is a definite end in sight it is easier to make yourself do it.

4 Steps to Find Balance as a SAHM

How many times have you come to the end of your day and feel as though you got nothing done? Somehow you feel absolutely exhausted. Where did the time go? Find out with these 4 steps to find balance as a SAHM (stay-at-home mom).

This problem is not exclusive to SAHM’s but it is uniquely more difficult to overcome. Why? It is because you don’t have any of the external forces determining structure for you. You don’t have a desk dictating when your day starts and ends. There is no incentive to shower each morning. Every day is a blank canvas waiting for you to structure it. That’s hard!

Don’t be discouraged during this process. You might find out you’re spending hours binging on Netflix each day like I did. It’s sobering to see what you really spend your time on. However, it doesn’t have to stay that way. I’m now more productive than ever and can take a break guilt-free.

Step 1: Get an Hourly Tracking System

The first step to finding balance is to know where your time is being spent. Before you can do that, you need a system to track your time. Luckily, there are multiple ways to do this.

You can create a note on your phone to do this digitally. Grab a piece of paper and use it to track your time. My favorite option (and the one that I personally used) is an hourly planner sheet for my Happy Planner. The reason this is my favorite is because it can also be used later when planning your day.

Step 2: Track Your Time

This step is done in one week, Monday through Friday. Set an hourly timer on your phone. Each time it goes off, reset it and write what you are currently doing in the corresponding time slot of your tracker.

The key here is not to change your current habits. If you are scrolling through Facebook, keep on scrolling after you take a moment to note it. At the end of the week you will have a typical week mapped out.

Step 3: Evaluate Your Results

Now it is time to evaluate you results. Grab a set of highlighters and follow the steps below:

  1. Create a color-code key with the highlighters. (See the photo above for reference.)
  2. Next, use your key as a guide and highlight each hour on your tracker according to what category it falls into.
  3. Use the colors as a visual guide to where you are wasting time and what needs more of your time.

Step 4: Restructure Your Day

Once you’ve evaluated how you spend your hours, it is time to restructure your day. Think of this like a budget. Just as you have to tell your money what to do with a budget the same goes for your time.

If you don’t tell your time where to go you will find it gone with nothing to show for it. Lay out activities on your hourly planner for each day of the week. Color code those activities as well to ensure that you are balancing your time.

Important Tip

Don’t fall prey to believing that every day has to look the same or equally balanced. Some days involve more homemaking tasks and others will be heavy with family time. That’s okay. Instead of trying to balance all of your responsibilities each day, strive for a weekly balance.

These 4 steps to find balance as a SAHM are a lifestyle change. You can write down your restructured day then not follow the plan. That is like creating a budget but not spending your money according to it. Planning is only the first step. Action is what makes it a reality.
