A few weeks ago I took all 3 kids to their eye appointments and found out that all 3 of them need glasses this year. What?! I mean, at least they’re doing something together but dang, that’s crazy!

While picking out glasses my oldest picked up this pair of black frames and was crazy excited about how they made him look like a nerd. Basically, if there was ever any doubt that he was mine, it’s definitely gone now.

I thought new “nerdy” glasses needed a super sweet new shirt to go with them. This month’s Bring on the Crafts challenge was the perfect reason to try something totally new like iron-on vinyl.

Red Vinyl on Cutting Mat

Step 1

First, put a piece of red vinyl on your cutting mat with the shiny side down. You don’t need a large piece because you are only cutting one word from it.

Create a Friend Cricut Cartridge Box

Step 2

Then prep your Cricut with the cartridge and the universal button cover. Set your pressure to medium and adjust the size to 6 inches.

Step 3

Next, load your cutting mat with the red vinyl on it and press the “FLIP” button on your machine.

Step 4

Now cut out the word “Rule”.

Note:

Step 5

Remove the vinyl from the cutting mat. The blade should not have cut through the plastic cover on the vinyl.

Cut Out Rule Vinyl Piece

Weeded Backwards Vinyl Word Rule

Step 6

Cut around your design in a rectangle then weed (or remove) all of the negative design parts so that only your backwards word is left.

Navy Blue Vinyl on Cutting Mat

Step 7

Set your weeded design to the side and place the navy blue vinyl on your cutting mat. This one needs to be bigger because you are cutting 2 designs in it.

Step 8

Again, make sure the “FLIP” button is pressed on your machine and cut the word “Nerds” in the navy blue vinyl.

Step 9

Before cutting your second design, change the size to 8 inches. Then cut the glasses and tie design from your navy blue vinyl.

Cut Out Nerds and Glasses Navy Vinyl Pieces

Step 10

Next, remove your cut vinyl from the mat and then cut around your designs.

Weeded Nerds and Glasses Navy Vinyl Pieces

Step 11

Again, weed the designs so that only the word “Nerds” and the glasses are left.

Step 12

Now pull out your t-shirt and warm up your EasyPress to 340° Fahrenheit.

Step 13

Place your shirt on a heat-safe surface like an ironing board.

EasyPress on Grey Shirt

Step 14

Once your EasyPress is heated, press the area of your shirt where the design will go.

Step 15

Then line up your design on your shirt. Make sure none of the design overlaps the plastic from another part otherwise your design will stick to the plastic instead of your shirt.

Step 16

Next, cover the design with a piece of cloth to protect your shirt from the heat. I used a second t-shirt but you can also use a towel or cotton napkin too.

EasyPress on Shirts

Step 17

Press your design for 30 seconds.

Step 18

Then flip your shirt over and press the design from the back for another 30 seconds.

Step 19

Allow your design to cool completely.

Finished Nerds Rule Design on T-Shirt

Step 20

Lastly, carefully peel off your plastic leaving only your design on the shirt.

I know I’m late to the game but I hadn’t done anything with vinyl yet. I have only used my Cricut for scrapbooking but I know that even my basic version is capable of a lot more. This DIY nerds rule t-shirt is totally proof of that. Even better, my little man loves it and I think it’s the perfect shirt for my super awesome nerd!

After years of surprising the wonderful men in our life with heartfelt gifts, you hit a point where you struggle with ideas for what to gift. Luckily, it seems universal that adorable creations by kiddos is always welcome so you can’t go wrong with something the little ones help make.

This project is a fun and creative take on the traditional necktie gift for Father’s Day. Instead of buying a boring tie that anyone can pick up at the store, create a totally unique one that dads and granddads will proudly wear every chance they get!

Step 2

Next, divide your tie into thirds and mark the sections using rubber bands.

Step 3

After the tie is divided, let each kiddo decorate one section. We went with a gray fabric marker for all of the kids designs because of concern over the type of tie their grandpa can wear to work. You can go more colorful depending on Dad or Grandpa’s style.

Tip:

Step 4

After each kid has colored in his or her sections, remove the rubber bands and press with an iron to set the design in the fabric. I didn’t want to risk throwing this in the dryer but you need to set fabric marker designs with heat.

Tip:

Step 5 (Optional)

If you want to take your gift to the next level, gift it tied around the neck of a button up shirt. Then wrap and surprise Dad with it!

Not only is this DIY Father’s Day tie designed by kids a thoughtful gift that Dad will treasure but at $10.00, it’s also super budget-friendly. Don’t forget that you can make it appropriate for the stodgiest office dress code by sticking with a neutral color like gray, as we did. You can also get totally crazy with it and let the kiddos go nuts with colors and designs. Even if the overuse of ink makes the designs bleed together, you still end up with an awesome and unique creation for Dad to show off!

Pressed Flower DIY Bookmark Craft

Getting lost in a book is one of the greatest joys of all time. That’s why there are so many bibliophiles out there. If you’re looking for an easy gift for a book loving mom or simply want a pretty way to keep your place, this pressed flower DIY bookmark is perfect!

[bctt tweet=”This pressed flower DIY bookmark is seriously beautiful and easy to make. Perfect to give as a gift or keep your place in your current reads!” username=”diyadulation”]

Even though I love books, I’ve never made acquiring bookmarks a priority. Like any busy mom reader, I simply stuck whatever was handy and close by in the pages to save my spot. I think the most recent was a Wonder Woman trading card one of the kids gave me.

This month’s Bring on the Crafts Blog Hop is the perfect opportunity to finally change that up. This month the challenge is flowers and this beautiful bookmark definitely fits the bill. The bright and pretty flowers are so cheerful to look at. It is also a lot less likely to fall out of the book (which the card totally did more than once).

You can totally press your own flowers for this craft. I chose to buy mine because I was having trouble getting the vibrant colors to stay. That will be next month’s test project, figuring out how to do that. Speaking of, if you have any tips, I’d love to hear them!

Materials for Pressed Flower Bookmarks

Step 1

First, put on your protective gloves. Handling epoxy resin without having them on is dangerous.

Mixed Resin next to Pressed Flowers

Step 2

Add 2 tbsp of each element of your epoxy resin to your small plastic cup.

Step 3

Use your popsicle stick to stir the mixture together.

Step 4

Next, pour a small amount of the resin into your mold and spread it around to cover the bottom of the mold.

Pressed Flowers in Resin in Bookmark Mold

Step 5

Once there is a small layer of resin in the bottom of your mold, arrange your flowers in it as you want them designed.

Note:

Clear Resin over Pressed Flowers in Bookmark Mold

Step 6

After all of your flowers are arranged, cover them with the remaining epoxy resin. Do this slowly so that you don’t overfill your mold. Also take care to make sure every crevice is filled. You can carefully use your popsicle stick to spread it if necessary, especially around the hole at the top of the mold.

Cured Resin Pressed Flower Bookmark in Mold

Step 7

Allow your bookmark to cure for at least 24 hours before moving on. Try not to move it if at all possible because this can shift your flowers and ruin your arrangement.

Step 8

After the resin is cured, remove your bookmark from the mold.

Step 9

Next sand any rough edges on your bookmark.

Step 10

Then sand the hole in the top of the bookmark so that it doesn’t cut your ribbon with use.

Step 11

Wipe down any areas you sanded with a damp cloth.

Step 12

Now, cut a piece of ribbon and attach it to your bookmark with a slipknot.

This pressed flower DIY bookmark is seriously beautiful and easy to make. The set of flowers that I bought is enough to make multiple bookmarks so you can make one for all of the book loving moms in your life (and one for you too). If you really want to take your gift to the next level, add one of your favorite books along with the bookmark. That’s the ultimate awesome Mother’s Day gift!
