Make Your Own Candy

First things first, cut back on the amount of candy that you put in the baskets. Filling the baskets with more gifts and less candy means that fewer items are needed to fill the basket. To further save, make your own candy at home. We bought this cross mold 2 years ago to make our own chocolates for the baskets and it has been worth every penny. Hard candies are another easy candy to make. You can go even further and try your hand at making your own peeps.

Skip the Grass

I don’t know about you but I hate that plastic Easter grass. It always ends up all over the house for weeks after the holiday has ended. A few years ago I started filling the baskets with tissue paper and it’s fantastic. We always have some on hand and it is easily folded for storage. It is an easy and economical alternative.

Reuse Your Baskets

Don’t buy new Easter baskets every year. If you decide you want to freshen up your baskets, give them a makeover. I am a fan of traditional baskets and ours are getting an awesome Pokémon makeover this year. However, those plastic Easter buckets can be easily updated as well.

Hollar is Your Secret Weapon

When you have a budget of $10 per basket it is important to bargain shop. That is where Hollar comes in. Instead of running all over town in search of the best deals, I can jump on Hollar and get everything. The best part is that shipping is free with purchases over $25 which means your entire budget can go to basket-fillers. This year, I was able to get brand name items to fill our baskets at a fraction of the cost. Here are just a few of the items I scored this year:

Those deals don’t even scratch the surface of what you can find on Hollar. Your family can have an awesome Easter on a small budget. We were able to fill 5 Easter baskets for under 50 dollars and you can too! Did I mention that if you sign up for a new account you’ll get a $2 credit towards your purchase? That’s free money to fill your baskets! If you want even more ways to save on Easter find out how you can make the day easier with this DIY Golden Bunny Bank. How Cincinnati Bell is Giving Back

Cincinnati Home Campaign

Cincinnati Bell knows that community is important, too. They know that investing in our home makes it stronger. One way they are investing in our community is the Cincinnati Home Campaign. They have created these awesome t-shirts featuring the iconic Roebling Bridge. The shirts are $20 each with the proceeds going to four local organizations:

  • CancerFree KIDS: Mission is to eradicate cancer as a life-threatening disease in children.
  • The Dragonfly Foundation: Supports kids, young adults, and their families as they endure cancer and bone marrow transplants.
  • USO of Central and Southern Ohio: Supports local military service members around the world and their families.
  • Spca Cincinnati: Animal shelter and Humane Society dedicated to improve the welfare of animals by fostering the Humane Care and Treatment of all animals.

They are even giving back to our community by investing in local businesses for the Cincinnati Home Campaign. The company printing the t-shirts is located right in downtown Covington and is locally owned and operated. This campaign is proving that it pays to invest in your community through and through.

Fioptics at Home

When we bought our house I was ecstatic. There was literally only one thing that I was bummed about and that was that I couldn’t have my Fioptics internet because it wasn’t available in our neighborhood. Lightning fast connections and ability to stream everything we want easily is a no-brainer.

This time it’s even better because now we have the awesome television package, too. You can choose from tons of packages from sports to kids. You also get access to OnDemand shows and movies. Don't go into debt for Black Friday because you love a bargain. Find out how to actually save money on Black Friday!

How to Actually Save Money on Black Friday

In case you didn’t know, I am an avid Black Friday shopper. Over the years I have utilized every way to save on that day from shopping online to camping out in the snow at Target. It is a fun and time-honored tradition for me. Just because I love a bargain doesn’t mean I overspend and put us in debt for this deal-mania, though. Instead, I have set rules in place that I follow every season. Now I want to share how to actually save money on Black Friday with you as well as hook you up with some free moolah to shop with!

Don't go into debt for Black Friday because you love a bargain. Find out how to actually save money on Black Friday!

Start Now

Don’t think that you are forced to spend Thanksgiving Day planning for a successful Black Friday haul. Many major stores “leak” their ads early on purpose. Take advantage of this. My favorite database for this is Brad’s Black Friday. He and his team have been doing this for years. They know how to verify leaked ads and can spot a fake from a mile away. If you are relying on Black Friday deals to stay on budget this year then start planning now.

Do Your Research

When you see a deal for an item on your Christmas list make sure that you know it is a good deal. Companies pay people a lot of money to get you to part with your hard-earned cash. Check out what items are going for in stores now and compare to the deals in the leaked ads. If you’re only saving a few dollars off of the regular price is it really worth the fight through the chaos?

Make a List and Stick to It

This is the number one best thing you can do to save on Black Friday. Make a list of the exact items you want to pick up. While you are shopping, do not deviate from that list. The chaos of Black Friday encourages you to buy now! This is made even worse with many deals being available online. Shopping online prevents you from seeing any of your money leaving. It also keeps you from seeing the items you purchase accumulate.

Brave the Store

I know that this turns a lot of people off of Black Friday. When you think about the points made above it makes sense that you will save the most money in store. However, in addition to those points, here are a few more reasons to visit the stores on Black Friday:

  1. It forces you to prioritize. Many stores open at the same time and you have to decide which store has more of the items you are looking for.
  2. A lot of deals on big items such as game consoles and televisions are only available in the store (although I recommend skipping these items in most cases… read more about that here).
  3. You get tired. When you are on your feet for hours hauling items and waiting in line you will lose stamina. Being tired will send you home with more money in your pocket than shopping on the couch will.

Now are you ready to win some free cash?! Enter below and don’t forget to share with your friends!

Create a Designer Bedroom Effortlessly

Even if you aren’t a designer or on a tight budget, I have one tip that will help you create a designer bedroom effortlessly.

Your bedroom is your oasis. It should be a relaxing retreat from the stress of the day-to-day. When is the last time, if ever, that you invested in it? If you’re like me, the answer is never. Fall is right around the corner and I am challenging you to create a relaxing bedroom retreat before the holidays pick up. Even if you aren’t a designer or on a tight budget, I have one tip that will help you create a designer bedroom effortlessly. Surprise: it’s as easy as picking a comforter.

Why Start with the Comforter

The easiest way to achieve a cohesive, designer bedroom is start with the focal point of your room. Choose your bedding set first. This helps in 3 ways:

  1. It provides you a color scheme from which to work.
  2. You can take a pillow sham with you to coordinate other elements such as drapes, art, and accessories.
  3. It helps set the direction for the overall style of your room.

Above is the comforter that I picked out as the starting point for my designer bedroom. I found it on Groupon Goods along with tons of other gorgeous styles! They also have price ranges to match everyone’s budget. I love the colors in this one and can’t wait to start piecing the rest of the bedroom together.

Determine Bold or Subtle Walls

Once you have the selected, use it to help pick your wall color. This is where you need to decide if you want to be bold or subtle. Even if you have chosen a neutral comforter, you can still go bold for your wall color. However, if you have chosen a bright and colorful comforter, going bright/bold on the walls will make the room seem more energized and less peaceful. If that is your style, go for it! If you needs some extra tips, here a few rules to help out the design-challenged:

  • Don’t try to match everything. You don’t want a fuchsia comforter, fuchsia walls, and fuchsia décor all layered on top of each other.
  • Adding a neutral color to the wall allows you to be bolder in choosing artwork and accessories that add pops of color and pattern.
  • Feel free to pull any colors you want from the comforter and mix them up around the room.

Furniture Matters

Choosing your comforter first also sets the style course for the room. If new furniture is out of your budget you can makeover your existing furniture. Keep in mind that some furniture styles and patterns do not go together. Distressed furniture doesn’t pair with colorful and ornate bedding. Don’t add mirrors to your night stand if your bedding is a country quilt design. These are tips to keep in mind when designing your retreat.

Tips

Saving money only works if you have a plan. Don’t go spending your hard earned money until you choose a focus and set goals. If you don’t do that first, you will be wasting money. Here are some ideas to help you get focused:

  1. Prepare for the HolidaysThese deals are a great chance to get an early jump on your holiday shopping. This is my favorite way to utilize these kinds of sales. Check out the gift planner on our VIP Page before you start so you can keep track of all of your purchases. (Not subscribed yet? Sign up here for access to your VIP library of free resources.)
  2. Get Organized This year there are tons of options to help you save on getting organized. If you’ve been Organizing Your Life from A to Z, this is a great way to do so on a budget!
  3. Prepare for VacationGet your family vacation ready with deals on items like air mattresses and technology. You can even find deals on items to put in your Road Trip Survival Bag for Kids (or get some of those splurge items that make life on the road easier).
  4. Professional DevelopmentThese sales are great to build up your tools, resources, and even your skills. You can upgrade your camera and invest in a lighting kit. Purchase development tools such as a foreign language software or professional books.

Again, the best way to save the maximum amount of money is to have a clear and concise focus that you do not deviate from. These are just a few ideas for narrowing your purchase scope. Use them as starting points to find the perfect buying focus for your current needs.

I’m a nerdy, crafty mom of three adorable little kids. I love writing and creating, but in my non-existent free time I also love karaoke, taking my kids to the zoo, and reading. I got my degree in Science (no idea how that happened) but I took every English class I could get my hands on because, yeah, I’m that girl.

Kid Valentines + 5 Awesome Everyday Uses for Custom Fonts

Here are 5 awesome everyday uses for custom fonts (including free printable kid Valentines) that I wish someone would have told me about years ago.

Valentine’s Day is about more than candy and romance.  It is about celebrating what you love, what makes you vibrant, and what brings you joy.  For me, that means celebrating my love of creating.  I love bringing you fun tutorials every week and I love creating free printables for you (like the super-sweet kid valentines in this post).  Creativity is hard-wired into my existence and since creating this site I am always on the hunt for awesome photos, tools, and resources that I can use to create things for you.  I wish I had known about so many of these resources long before DIY Adulation came to be because they are useful in everyday life as well.  To help you learn from my regret, here are 5 awesome everyday uses for custom fonts (including the free printable kid Valentines) that I wish someone would have told me about years ago.

Here are 5 awesome everyday uses for custom fonts (including free printable kid Valentines) that I wish someone would have told me about years ago.

1. Digital Scrapbooking

Digital scrapbooking is great for busy moms because they take a lot less time to create yet still make beautiful custom pages that preserve your family memories.  You want the journaling on your pages to look handwritten (although maybe not yours or my handwriting) and still be legible.  Custom fonts can do that for you.  They can also allow you to create beautiful titles that tie all of your memories together in a theme befitting your family.

2. Cricut and Silhouette

Want to put those beautiful vinyl sayings on your walls but not loving the $50+ price tag?  You can design and cut your own for a fraction of the price using your Cricut or Silhouette, both of which allow you to cut your own custom designs.  By the way, those vinyl clings are good for more than just walls.  Cut smaller ones to label containers in your pantry, personalize the back of your minivan, and update the numbers on your mailbox!  There are a ton of uses here!

3. Custom Shirts

If you have an upcoming charity event, fundraiser, or just a class reunion making custom shirts is a great way to raise money, get the word out about the cause, or simply commemorate the night.  You can totally print these online using a custom font to make your design stand out but that can get pricey.  Instead, opt for printing out your design and creating a wax paper stencil to paint the shirts.

4. Invitations

There are a ton of events during the year that you end up needing invitations for.  From birthdays to graduations and weddings, the list seems never ending.  Make your own invitations using custom fonts.  Not only can you make sure that you get exactly what you want (great for control freaks like me) but once you have your design you can make sure every piece of stationary is coordinated from the invitations and thank you cards to the place settings.

5. Graphic Design

Our society is rapidly approaching a day when graphic design will be as ubiquitous as email is not.  Don’t think you have a use for graphic design?  What about:

  • Making your own calendar or planner
  • Creating personalized address labels
  • Family Christmas card
  • Organized shopping list pad

There are a ton of ways you might already be doing graphic design work and not even realize it.  Heck, making a PowerPoint presentation is a part of graphic design.  If you don’t believe me, sit through a presentation where the speaker just reads verbatim off of the slides as you sit there wondering, “Why didn’t you just print this out and let me read it?”

6. BONUS: Custom Cards

Yes, we talked about invitations but let’s expand on this even more. You can makes greeting cards, post cards, and these awesome kid Valentines cards I made for you.  You may love creating your own cards so much that you could open an Etsy shop selling your custom designs and make a little extra money on the side for your family.  How awesome would that be?  Go ahead and download these free Valentines and start getting inspired!

Okay, confession.  I had no idea they even made felting machines! They do, however, and this one is on clearance for $149. I admit that I don’t know if this is a good deal (since I didn’t even know they were a thing until now) but I wanted to include it in case it is something you have been searching for a deal on.

My store also had this “Feature Item of the Month” hand soap for $1 each. I have never seen this before and I don’t know if it will become a regular monthly promotion, but this is still a great deal on soap.  One caveat: smell the soap before you buy it!  Not all of the scents were true to their names and you don’t want to take one home and then hate it.

Bonus shopping tip:

This week, I needed D-rings and it reminded me of an important tip to help you save money on your craft supplies. The first place I found them was in the purse making materials section. Notice that they were $2.49 for two and I needed four. Even with the 50% off coupon, it would cost $3.74 to get 4.  In the sewing accessories section, they had these 4 packs of D-rings (in an assortment of colors and sizes) also for $2.49 a pack. By searching a little more and not being satisfied with the price on the original ones found, I got all four D-rings for 1.25! Saving a couple of dollars may not seem like much, but those dollars add up!

As always, these were the deals I found at my stores and quantities and sales may vary by area. Happy crafting, friends!

See where I’m linking up!
