DIY Mini Mug Candle

It is that awesome time of the month again when we get together to share our projects for the Monthly Thrift Store Upcycle Challenge! Since Mother’s Day is in a few weeks, I thought I’d help you out with a DIY gift idea. Surprise the mom in your life even if that mom is you! (No judgement here, momma.) This DIY mini mug candle is fast, easy, and frugal. Before we get the tutorial, I want to point out that I used recycled candle wax that I had collected over the years. My wax was already scented and colored so I didn’t have to add any of that. That is why you will see in the Materials that scented oil is optional.

Looking for an easy Mother's Day gift idea? These DIY dragonfly fingerprint succulent planters are easy and such a blast to make! Mom and kid approved!

DIY Dragonfly Fingerprint Succulent Planters

Every year we love surprising the grandmas with a handmade gift from the kiddos. The kids love making it and grandma delights at the surprise. This year we made these adorable DIY dragonfly fingerprint succulent planters. They are easy to make and your kiddos will love getting messy with paint. (Just don’t forget to put on their aprons or shirt to protect their clothes.) A little tip to make the process easier: give each kid and extra pot and some paint then let them go nuts. This will keep them from getting impatient waiting to add their fingerprints to the planters.

These DIY dragonfly fingerprint succulent planters were such a blast to make! The youngest got upset that green paint got on his hands which made it even more adorable. Don’t forget to give your kids a pot to paint to keep them entertained while they wait to put their fingerprints on. This saved my life during this project. This is also a great DIY for moms if teachers or dads want to get in on the artistic action. You can get more fun Mother’s Day ideas with these Kid Made Mother’s Day Storybooks. They are a fantastic way to preserve memories and a great way for kids to practice their writing skills.

Getting your home ready to welcome it is a great way to hurry spring along. Start by making these DIY birch bark bud vases to display those first violets!

Step 1

Clean your jars including removing any labels. For my vases, I used an old baby food jar and a small pizza sauce jar.

Tip:

  • Try to get the label glue off as best as you can but don’t worry if you can’t get it completely off. You will be covering it anyway.

Step 2

Pull out your birch strips and have them ready to attach to your vases.

Step 3

Start attaching your birch strips around the bottom of your jar. Do this by adding a line of hot glue and firmly pressing a birch strip to it.

Step 4

Trim your birch strips so that there is a small overlap.

Step 5

Secure the birch overlap with a dab of hot glue.

Step 6

Continue covering your jar by repeating steps 3 through 5 until you have reached the top of your jar.

Tip:

  • Try to line up the birch seams on your vase as you go.

Step 7

Once you reach the top of your jar you have 2 options for finishing it:

  1. If there is enough excess on the top birch strip add a second line of glue around the mouth of the jar and press the top of the strip firmly to it.
  2. Alternatively, if the strip isn’t large enough for that, add an additional strip but trim it down to the top of the jar after gluing.

These DIY birch bark bud vases are a super simple and sweet spring décor addition. As you can see, I chose to use fake flowers in mine. They can easily be used for fresh flowers too. When it is time to clean them, add a dab of soap and water to a baby bottle brush and carefully scrub the inside. Next, rinse out your brush and use the damp brush to rinse out the soap from your vase. Avoid getting the wood on the outside wet. Now are you ready to take your spring refresh to the next level? DIY Monogrammed Tote Bag

I don’t know about you but I love the beach! If our house were a dictatorship, with me as queen, every family vacation would be to the Gulf Coast. Unfortunately, we take turns deciding destinations. This means more often than not our trips consist of hiking and camping. If your family vacation finds you -anywhere off of the trails, this is the perfect do-it-yourself project for you. This monogrammed tote bag can be customized to your style and holds everything you’ll need for a day out! (Or you can do what I did and give it as a wonderful gift.)

Whether you're hitting the beach or traveling historical sites with your family, get yourself vacation ready with this DIY monogrammed tote bag!

Step 1

Using your fabric marker, draw the initial you want in the middle of your tote bag.

Tips:

  • You will need to go over the initial multiple times to darken it. Think of it as multiple coats of paint.
  • If you would like, you can add decorative swashes to it (as I did).
  • If you don’t trust (or like) your handwriting, you can use a stencil for your monogram.

Whether you're hitting the beach or traveling historical sites with your family, get yourself vacation ready with this DIY monogrammed tote bag!

Step 2

Once the paint has dried, go over the design with a heat tool.

Tip:

  • Hold the tool at least 12 inches from your design if you are using the same bag in the photos. The material it is made of will melt if exposed to the extreme heat that a heat gun can put out.

Step 3

Next, remove the metal clips from your flowers as well as any packaging.

Tip:

  • The flower clips pictured were easy to disassemble. Gently pulling on the clip made it come right off.

Step 4

Cut the remaining stems off of your flowers.

Step 5

Add a generous amount of hot glue to the back of one of your flowers and adhere it to your tote.

Tip:

  • Let the glue cool slightly before pressing the flower to your tote. A few seconds should be enough. You simply don’t want the glue to melt through the bag.
  • Slide your hand inside the tote and press firmly from behind to better secure the flower.

This monogrammed tote makes a perfect beach bag because of the size and material of it. Of course, you will love it so much that you’ll be happy to sling it on your shoulder even if your family adventures don’t take you to the sand. To wash, simply wipe your tote down with a damp cloth. Mild soap is okay if needed but no bleach or heavy duty cleaners. Also, be sure to wipe it down by hand. The washer will make the flowers come off. Lastly, if your little girl will be traveling with you, make her this adorable little purse to show off on your trip!

This is such an easy and beautiful DIY floral hat. This is the perfect personalized gift for the gardening mom or the fashionista mom.

Step 8

Cut the remaining stem off of the back of the flowers and apply hot glue to one. Firmly press flower to the side of the hat opposite the ribbon seam.

Step 9

Attach your second flower with hot glue next to the first.

Tips:

  • Place the flowers close together for a fuller effect. You don’t want any of the hat to show between them. See the picture for reference.
  • It also helps to attach flowers with what would be the stem end of the flowers facing toward each other.

Watch a Movie

With Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu services, finding a free movie to watch is easier than ever. If you’re movie buffs and want to watch something newer with your mom, check online for free Redbox rental codes. Rent the newest release in mom’s favorite genre and treat her.

Look Through Photo Albums

A wonderful idea that won’t cost you a penny is to spend time with your mom looking through old photo albums. Let her show you pictures from her childhood. She will enjoy sharing her past with you and you may learn something you didn’t know before about your mom.

Get Fit Together

Find a free class in your area for some fun fitness like Zumba or yoga. Throw up your hair and take your mom to try it out. You both may enjoy it so much that you will have found a new activity to do regularly with each other. If you and/or your mom are a little self-conscious about going to a class, find a free video on YouTube. You can still get all the benefits of the activity but in the privacy of your own home.

Cook Together

This is a great bonding activity that can be reminiscent of your childhood. Let you mom teach you how to make something new or a family recipe that has been passed down. Not only will you learn a new recipe but it will spark conversation about memories and tips. Bonus: afterward you will have some delicious food to eat.

Game Night

Game nights are a big deal in my family. One of my mom’s favorite things is when my brother and I bring our families over for a night of board games. This is a fun and totally free way to make Mother’s Day special for your mom. Plus, it is a ton of fun!

Call Her

This is such a simple act that would mean the world to your mom (or grandma, or mother-in-law). All it costs you is time and she will appreciate the gesture immeasurably. Ask her what she has been up to or maybe what plans coming up she is excited about! This is a great way to open conversation lines and let her take the lead.

Pamper Yourselves

This is another excellent activity to do with your mom. Make some foot soaks, DIY face masks, and mimosas. Next spend the day (or a few hours) and pamper yourselves. If you have the tools (and the talent) you can also do manicures and pedicures. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s relaxing and fun!

Enjoy Her Hobbies

Take the opportunity to enjoy her hobbies with her. If your mom is a gardener, help her out in the garden. She will appreciate the time with you and most likely appreciate the help as well. If she loves to knit, have her teach you some basics stitches or show you how to read a pattern. The point is to choose something that she loves and share it with her.

Go for a Hike

Something about being outside together opens up lines of communication between people. Go to a state park or find a walking trail in your city and spend a few hours hiking together. Before you go, make sure you have plenty of water and some snacks, depending on how long your hike will be. Also make sure you take plenty of photos with mom while you’re out!

Karaoke Night

If your mom loves to sing, treat her to a private karaoke night. If you don’t already own a karaoke machine, you likely know someone who has one you could borrow for the night. Set it up, pour some wine, and take turns belting out your favorite songs!

That your mother who no longer walks this earth can't be imagined, only experienced. An open letter to all the daughters without their mom.

To All the Daughters without Their Mom

We will always lose our mothers too soon.  There is never a time that we will be ready for our mother to leave us, no matter what the circumstances.  Unfortunately, too many of my friends have lost their mothers in childhood or as young adults.  My heart breaks for them. I cannot fathom what it is like to receive the news that your mother is no longer in this world. My mom and I are freakishly close and being a mother myself, I know that NOTHING could ever break the bond between a mother and her child.  So to all the daughters without their mom this Mother’s Day, whatever the reason, I want you to know this:

That your mother who no longer walks this earth can't be imagined, only experienced. An open letter to all the daughters without their mom.

That your mother who no longer walks this earth can't be imagined, only experienced. An open letter to all the daughters without their mom.

She Sees You

She sees your struggles and your triumphs.  When you cry to her and wish her arms could just hold you in that moment, she hears you.  Her love is enveloping you in an amazing embrace even if you can’t feel it.

That your mother who no longer walks this earth can't be imagined, only experienced. An open letter to all the daughters without their mom.

She Doesn’t Want Perfection

You will always be perfect in her eyes.  Don’t worry if you make mistakes.  She did too.  We all do.  That is a part of life.  Mistakes teach us, even the ones we continue to make over and over.  And guess what, you are still perfect to her. She wants you to know that your mistakes do not define you. Your mistakes are molding you into exactly the woman you are supposed to become.

That your mother who no longer walks this earth can't be imagined, only experienced. An open letter to all the daughters without their mom.

She is Proud of You

She is proud of you. Even your smallest accomplishments, from choosing a healthy meal over that delicious cake or buying your first house, are moments of pride.  They are all amazing triumphs in her eyes.  She sees and has always known the amazing woman you are growing to be. Even when you are doubting yourself, she doesn’t. Her faith and pride in you is without end.

That your mother who no longer walks this earth can't be imagined, only experienced. An open letter to all the daughters without their mom.

She Loves You

This cannot be said enough.  Whether your mom said it constantly or almost never, it was, is, and always will be there.  It transcends our understanding and comes in many forms but your mom loves you.  Always.  Period.

It is never easy to live through the loss of your mom. It doesn’t matter if you know it is coming or if the loss is completely unexpected. I can remember the devastation I felt at receiving a call at 13 years old to inform me that my best friend’s mom had passed away during the night.  It was heart stopping.  I just sank to the floor with our phone still in my hand. That was how strongly it hit me even then when it was not my mom. The realization that it is your mother who no longer walks this earth is something that cannot be imagined, only experienced. Please take comfort in these words when you are wishing you could hear your mom’s voice one last time. Know that she is with you today and all the days of your life.

Don’t buy your Mother’s Day cards this year. Instead, put on some aprons and make your cards instead! This is such a super fun way to make kid made mother’s day cards that children will love to make and moms will love to get!  Part of what I love about projects like this is how excited my kids get when their grandmothers open these handmade creations.  They can’t wait to tell them all about it and these are the memories that they will carry with them long after they have their own kids.  Besides, it’s fun to play with paint (even if it gets messy).

Step 1

Cut out the flat part of the Styrofoam container.

Tip:

  • I cut mine on a regular cutting board to keep from messing up my table and table cloth.

Step 2

Next, cut that in half so that it is about the size of the front of your cards.

Tip:

  • If you want, you can trim up the edges to make them neater but it is not necessary.

Step 3

Give one piece of foam and one mechanical pencil to each child and let them go nuts designing whatever they want.

Tips:

  • For my 2 year old, I took the lead out of the pencil because she kept clicking the lead out and you want to use a blunt edge on the foam.
  • My oldest tried to write his name on the foam but since he’s 6, he doesn’t get the whole you have to write it backwards on a stamp concept.  But the prints turn out very artistic either way so don’t stress if this happens to you.

Note: I have blurred the top corner where my son wrote his name.

Step 4

After they have finished their designs, apply paint to the foam design.

Step 5

Next, stamp it onto the front of the card.  Do this for as many cards as you need and then just rinse off with hot water.  The best part is that you can save it and reuse it as many times as you want.

Step 6

You can write a message on the inside of the card, or if your child is writing have him or her personalize it with their own message. Now just wait to see the delight on faces when this card is opened!

These will mean so much more to everyone involved than anything you’ll find on a store shelf! You can make as many cards as you need and mom or grandma can frame the unique artwork to hang on the wall. Kids will be so proud to be a part of the opening and excited to see it every time they visit. You will love that this is a much cheaper option than store bought especially if you have lots of grandparents to surprise on Mother’s Day!
